Hi all.
I know that most of y'all are sick of this subject. I had thought that I read enough on the subject too.
I was "sure" that I wanted the 190 xprob and the 488rc2
until I read a comment by someone about the common breakage of the legs/clasps and something a bit more problematic...

So let me ask...
How is the vibration control when you use the central piece along the cross axis (i.e. for the purported macro use of the system)?

Anyone have some real problems....some that would absolutely necessitate the use of corded/wireless release? Is the control better on the 055 xprob?

background: I can afford either one....but I don't want to afford both! I looked at the general performance and my general needs (which are very light) but macro centric. If I cannot expect in the field (with wind) that it can stay still, then I wasted money and time on my part. I was attracted to the cross beam ability as well as its weight in comparison to the 055.
the other choices I had were the slik 500 dx (the 700 is just too heavy for me to really take it around in my assessment).

I read here somewhere yesterday - research twice, buy once....though it feels that I have been researching for the past 4 months...and yet to purchase!!!

Thanks for the insights.

oh...it will hold...7d, 100mm macro...tubes...possibly a lens reversed...and flash/es

I own a 190xprob and in my opinion the only reason to have one over a 055xprob is the weight difference and slightly cheaper price [why I got mine].

If the cost isn't a great issue and you're not planning on carrying it for long distances, I can think of no reason not to get the 055 series. They're stronger, thicker and ultimately slightly better damped than the 190s.

If you bought a 190 I think you'd only find yourself asking whether the 055 would have been better.

Alternatively, if you take it out walking strapped to a backpack like I sometimes do, then a little less weight is always welcome.

but has anyone had problems in the field with the extending cross piece making the 190 or the 055 less stable and or "vibratory"?
it is one of the attractions it holds for me...and I am not interested in it as a gimmick....

thanks for any real-world advice.

I Are you referring to just extending the center column? Pretty much all tripods do that and it does make the tripod less stable. See the video from cameralabs (external link).

Or did you mean the center column moved into the horizontal position? I haven't see evidence, but I'm almost certain it also makes the tripod less stable since all mass of the camera is in a offset position.

OWSIU is right, having any weight that would change the C of G of the tripod would cause greater chances of vibrations.

thanks for the observations.
i wonder if those vibrations are enough that it would be practically untenable to be used for true macro photography....
any one with experiences? would you rather load your camera upside down on a reversed central column or use a swing arm as in the 190 or 055 xprob?
