Hey everyone,

I recently got an opportunity to get this lens for $180, so I figured I would research it to the best of my abilities.

So far it seems to be quite the rare lens that doesn't surface too much, and I haven't seen one for sale for anywhere else so I am unsure of the price range of this lens.

Could anyone give me their opinion on the lens and let me know if its worth $180? It's the Sigma 400 f5.6 APO (non macro version with 72mm filter thread)

It looks like it might be a fun cheap telephoto for birding with it wide open (supposedly gives error 99s if you try and stop down on newer bodies)

Let me know what you guys think!

I've got the non-APO and it's pretty ****ty wide open, the APO is apparently better but I can't imagine it being too great. If it would help with your decision I can get some sample shots tomorrow (it's going to get dark soon) with some comparisons with my Tamorn 70-300mm?

It definitely is, and a little bit better. It even focuses to 1:3 mag. Here's a sample, wide open of course. It's one of the sharpest lenses I've ever used. Not to mention beautiful bokeh and awesome contrast. 77mm filter, APO HSM Macro!

Your APO HSM macro is supposed to be the best of the bunch, it's not surprising it's that good wide open. Mine is the bottom of the barrel lens, the one Zerimar is after is the next one up I think, and then I think there is an APO HSM non macro above that (or APO macro non HSM, it gets rather confusing). I also believe mine is the oldest of the lot and every single one would give err99 on anything newer than a D60, where as the others were still produced until much later and so a few would still work on newer cameras.

It is confusing. I lucked out on mine. I have seen a few other APO Macro HSM's on ebay in the past month or so. It's worth the hunt.

I wish I researched it a bit more before I bought mine. I knew it wouldn't be anything amazing but I was expecting a lot better. I actually had a look round on Ebay for better ones last week with no luck, saw a normal APO one go for double what I paid for mine and that was about it. I've even been tempted to get a D60 just so I can use it stopped down, currently watching one but have a feeling it will go for way too much.

Just took some shots. Both tripod mounted, mirror lock up with self timer and at ISO 400.

Tamron 70-300mm @ 30mm f/5.6, around 1/100

And the 300mm shot roughly cropped to show the sharpness compared to the 400mm. Note this is wide open as well, stop down to f/8 and the difference becomes even more drastic.

Even viewing the 400mm shot and enlarging the 300mm one to the same size (about 133%) the 300mm shot is so much sharper and with less aberrations, so in my case it's completely obsolete (who wants to buy it? xD).

Wow, even just the APO looks tonnes better. Fancy a swap? xD I may have to consider the next one I see going cheap, never expected it to be that much better.

yeah. I think it looks like a good lens considering the price and those examples from it. I would just end up using it for birding or zoos and it would satisfy my long telephoto lust for some now. Being $1000 less than canons option sounds appealing :p

Looks like you got yourself a nice lens there. If it's making you images that you like, treat it like a $1000 lens. You got a good deal!
