Using Blackberry so this will be short. My 17-55 2.8is lens broke last night. The zoom wasn't working smoothly yesterday and suddenly froze in place I used moderate force to free the stuck barrel and it popped free. Now the barrel with extend with the zoom ring but will not return it also will not stay in place and fully extends when pointed down. Autofocus is also spotty. The lens is 6 months out of warranty, and suggestions for a quick fix? Or does it need to go to canon?

That sucks, being on vacation and all. I can't believe how many people have that lens fail.

Anyway being on vacation, I'd suggest grabbing another lens for the remainder of your trip. You'll probably just have to live with what you can find nearby, especially if overseas, probably a Tamron 17-50 or similar I guess (not too much financial outlay).

Good luck.

Nothing you can do but pay more to repair it or bin it. Unfortunately it is a plastic EF-S lens, not the best build quality by any means. I hope you have a spare lens on you, otherwise I hope you can buy something to continue your trip, even a 50 1.8 or a P&S or a disposable...
