I am looking for a wide-angle lens for my 30D that's under $600, but can also fit a full-frame sensor down the road. I was looking at both the Tamron 10-24mm and Sigma 10-20mm, but both are for APS-C sensors only. Now the likelihood of me getting a new camera won't be for a few more years, but I would like to have most of my lenses compatible when the change does come. Should i bother with that hope, or just go with buying lenses with this restriction?

I wouldn't worry about the future until the future. Just get a crop specific lens now and worry about the FF version when the time comes. Is there even a FF compatible lens that is considered UWA on a crop? There's also the Tokina 12-24 for under the $600 mark and the 11-16 for right at the $600 mark.

30D works with EF-S?

You can pick up Canon 10-22 used for about 600-620

EF-S works with all the Canon bodies except the 5D/mkii, and the 1D(s) series.

I picked up the Sigma 10-20mm f4-5.6 a while back for ~$420. Definitely worth it and have used it more than either my 18-200mm or 50mm 1.8. I leave it on when I'm traveling around and this summer in Europe I gave up carrying around the 18-200 because I never used it!

I've never had the sigma 10-20 but did own the Canon 10-22 for a while and loved it. Great lens, just not a focal length I used enough to justify keeping. I would think about the present and deal with a future body and lens lineup when it comes time. You can always sell the non-compatible lenses when/if it comes time.

The Canon 10-22 can be had for the $600-$625 range used here in the B&S forum.

i agree... with a FF you will most likely go with something like a 16-35 which will be plenty wide.. but that wont even be wide on a crop body.

hello.

Having owned the 10-20mm 4-5.6 I woudn't recommend it; perhaps get a preowned Canon 10-22 or either of the Tokina UWAs.

Alternatively there's the Sigma 15-30mm, not the widest for crop but will work on FF and has excellent optical quality, very sharp, and is also very cheap compared to the others.

find a used copy of the Canon EF 17-40 (28-65mm on 1.6, 30D)
or a Canon EF 20mm F2.8 (approx 32mm on 1.6, 30D)

check buy/sell on www.fredmiranda.com (external link) and other used sources

One vote here for the build, IQ, speed of Tokina 11-16. Great lens, holds its value great (in case you go full frame, rumor has it this lens only works around 16mm fl..so if that didnt work for you it could be sold for around what you paid). I love mine. Ive only personally used two wide angle lenses, this and the canon 10-22.....and i would pick my Tokina every time.

Why so? I'm on the fence between those two and the Sigma 10-20 3.5.
