I need a tripod

But I know nothing about them. I want a good one - I hate buyers remorse. I also don't know anything about heads.

I do have a Manfrotto monopod and a few of the quick release plates that go with them.

The 327RC2 pistol grip looks cool but, again, I don't know anything about these things.

Suggestions?

That's about all the positive there's to it.

- You need to keep it depressed to move the camera: That's one less hand to hold your camera.
- No (at least no good) drag setting, nor a positive lock.
- No separate pan control
- Bad (but that's partly personal) QR system.

Also, the "cool looking" "grip" is more likely to snag behind something when hiking for instance then a round knob...

Not to mention that if you go to portrait orientation the camera is so far from the centre of the tripod that it becomes unstable.
