I have received an email from a mate saying that on the 27th August Mars is the closest it will be to us until 2283 and that there is a once in a life time chance to see it almost the size of the moon.

I assume this is a spoof right?

Yes, it's a hoax.
I guess some people will never get tired of launching those hoaxes to the web.

False information turned viral. If this keeps up we'll have to give this thing a season name of its own. :)

Nice to dream about Mars being visible at the scale of the Moon though. Now that would sell some telescopes.
