As others have already stated, you need to use the camera. A lot. Only by using the camera will you realize what you need to acquire to improve your craft.

You also mentioned filters? I have one on my lens that I bought because the Ritz girl told me to. Basic I would imagine.

The Ritz girl told you because it will make Ritz money. Perhaps as much money as if you bought a lens. Take it off. It will do more damage than good. Lens hoods are the way to go.

Dont splash out on loads of gear, just take pictures, discover what works and what doesnt, and why. You dont necessarily need a flash, buy a reflector, theyre way cheaper and can do the job very well.
If you must splash out invest in a 50mm 1.4 as already mentioned, it'll do just about everything more than adequately, and you zoom with your feet, so you dont get lazy!
Good luck, enjoy!

I have been taking lots of pictures (except when my lenses were acting up)and some non-credit courses at a local college (super interesting and fun)! Looking at an external flash and have seen alot of suggestions here on POTN...how about this one...YongNuo YN-468 II E-TTL Speedlite With LCD Display! What do you think. I can get it for around $100...which I will need to save for!
