I have the Sigma 50f2.8 macro - a sharp lens, but I have the need for a faster lens in this focal length.
I am just not sure that I want to go there.

You're in the right place. Read backwards. You might need 2!

The best? The 50L stopped down to f/1.4.

The Canon 1.4 blows wide open. The Zeiss ZE is decent. The Sigma is okay.

well, I finished my converted Rokkor 58 yesterday. I ended up not getting Buchanans kit, but I might still. I got a generic eos mount and machined my own shim.

I'll post a couple when we get Internet back -- our building is out. but the bokeh is great. not a bad area anywhere. color and sharpness are top notch.

bad stuff: camera reads 00 for aperture. of course no exif data about the lens. no focus confirm, but I'm old and don't need this modern fluff anyway. but I do wish I could get a 1.2 on the body. so far, just my older 5D, but I'll do the II later. maybe give live view a chance.

anyone know how to fix that 00 issue?

I had a AF confirmed MF Nikon->EOS mount adaptor that did not show this issue. So I would suggest to try a different adaptor w/ AF confirmed chip on it.

Yes, a programmable AF confirm chip, the latest being the dandelion.

I realize you said you don't need focus confirm, but teh nice thing is that you can program these to get the lens and max aperture information in the exif, as well as the camera to report the maximum aperture (or any other aperture you program in).

Alternatively you can look for these on eBay.

Kind regards, Wim

Thanks WIMG, I think I can add that to my mount, without starting over. I like the programmability and tool.

Attached are the very first 2 shots. I'll shoot more today now that kids are here. Shots are crap, but I was testing bokeh and a center sharpness. Focus was on B in Starbucks, and 50 on the Contax. Backgrounds seem very controlled. Bokeh MUCH better than the Distagon 1.4.

I ordered it. Not sure why anymore; this is getting easier. Bokeh machine!

To get rid of the 00-aperture value on camera :D.

Looking good so far anyway :D.

I think the Sigmalux is a lot better on full frame than it is on crop. This was shot wide open, focusing (naturally) on the engagement ring.

mcluckie: Try the 58/1.2 with more complex backgrounds relatively near the focal plane. That's when the bokeh becomes really unique:

Yeah, I guess there wasn't much bokeh in what I posted before. I was just happy then to get backgrounds that weren't migraine-makers. The Distagon 50 was horrible and confused. I've shot a lot since, but whatever it is, the out of focus areas are pleasing to spectacular. I'll try to post some later.

Out for a walk with the 58 today. Windy as could be. Every time I approached a plant, I heard "use the 100 MP" from myself, so I never got close to the (always outstanding) posts by Luka. But here's the best bokeh I got today anyway. Might still have been better/as good with the 100MP. Oh well... it's a lens to be in my bag for when the time is right.
