Bright blue skies sure make the shiny stuff look wonderful!

Uh, the reflection of the photographer kills images, these have that fatal flaw in half of them.

Just my $0.02.

Sometimes the reflection of the photographer is intentional. And when it is pretty much unavoidable, might as well make the best of it.

Sometimes the reflection of the photographer is intentional.

Let's see your Transportation self portraits.

And when it is pretty much unavoidable, might as well make the best of it.

There are several ways to avoid them. How many can you think of?

Classic Carz, Racing, Air Show, Flowers.

Well I couldn't move the cars, or turn down the sun, or order in more clouds, or grow a tree fast enough. The place was packed full of people, so standing back and using a long zoom was out of the question. Pretty much all of the vehicles were behind ropes, with the front end at the rope, so using angles was restricted.
I did use my CPL, but it only does so much.
The ZR1 badge is obviously taken from an angle, without my reflection in it. That car was not roped off (it is the side badge) and I chose to not have my reflection in that one. As with many others.

It all comes down to personal choice. I simply chose to have my reflection in some of these. #5 being one that I absolutely intended to have look that way.

The rebellious side of me likes to break the rules sometimes.

I have to agree with Melody about the circumstances:
Harsh & directional light, combined with restricted viewing distances and angles,
plus a ton of people, often won't conspire together for a photographer's wishes.

I actually like your reflection in the Veyron detail, and the old fire pumper chrome
shot(#5) is a very cool treatment. It is the fire pumper, right? :o
The Cadillac V-16 emblem is also a standout.
Nice stuff, Mel.

people shouldn't (for a non amateur) be a factor if theres patience. Slanting could just be a few inches. I didn't mean have 400mm zooming in, but stand back farther and zoom in instead of total wide angle. Or the last resort is reviewing the picture and seeing if its in there and fix it on the next picture. It doesn't take that much time when its practice and you don't have to think about doing it (when its natural). If the shot is worth it, i'll wait 10-20 min for that shot (yes I know thats a long time but so worth it)

I realize that there are ways to get rid of the reflections. And I have lots of pictures in which I did. Most of these were taken at approximately 50mm for the close ups. It was often elbow to elbow around the nice stuff, and there was only 6 hours to see everything. Didn't even make it to some areas.

Thanks Craig!
I love the Veyron and Fire truck shots. The fire truck one is a pipe cap. Was polished so well that it was just an awesome mirror, perfect for a self portrait.

I have to admit that the redneck in me is attracted to shiny stuff.

I can appreciate your point of view, and you'd normally be right in your diagnosis. But you should understand that Melody almost exclusively used her 50/1.8, and the crowds and lighting factors truly conspire against those of us without press passes for capturing optimal conditions. We were both in the thick of the public showing, and we had to deal with all sorts of public nuisances, from thickheaded morons without a shred of awareness, to pompous *******s who seemed to think they were entitled to get the best shots by some sort of osmosis or inbreeding stature.

Needless to say, it's a challenging venue. Melody managed quite well, in my opinion.

I see, then yea, if you can't zoom in and all you have is a wide angle.... (I have a 18-200 on my DSLR - even though I only use it for historic racing lol) then thats a drawback.

ya, I hear that. Multi-car shots are the hardest shots to get, especially in a once in 3 years event (I HOPE theres a 4th!), in this case, the Porsche Rennsport Reunion.
This was one of my hardest shots... (and this is during the day with full blown people) 3 years ago.

she is getting better though!

PS- the ZR1 shot is excellent
