I have some very good shots with it (check birds folder on the link below). I think it is best value for the price. The build is fairly good but it does extend out quite a bit at 300mm which makes it somewhat less robust than it might first appear (not to mention much easier to accidentally smack the end of the lens into something or someone). IS image stabilization can also be extremely useful on a telephoto, particularly a slower one - unless you plan on using a tripod or monopod - so I would tend to give IS more weight in the decision than the Tamron's apparent build. I don't think you can find better than the 55-250mm IS in this price class.
