f/5, 4 seconds, iso 320. taken in total darkness without a tripod. It was a 4 second exposure but all the bolts happened at the same time. the intensity of the light showed the raindrops frozen in time in this 100% crop..

Yep, that would do it.

Wise decision and an incredible image.

Nice image (and I had a good chuckle at your thread title.)

Nice!
I think that would have been enough to chase my tail back indoors also.

it amazes me how thick (or overexposed) that one bolt is.. i could imagine it completely engulfing a car or something.

wow. This is a """"""4 second""""""" exposure!? Wow, that shows how strong and bright the lightning is. I would get scare too! This is awesome though!

I wonder what your shot would look like if the exposure was dialed down some?
I also got a bright bolt, see #1a, and reduced exposure in #1b (and lightened the shadows as well)

5 second exposure straight from the camera, no PP
#1a

PP with -2.25 exposure, shadows lightened

I rarely shoot any lightning over ISO 200. And since you dont need to be wide open, I set the Av to around 5.6 or so. This reduces the chance of a bright bolt overexposing. But I agree..thats a little close.
