I love my G11 and my skills are improving. I am going to be in the market for getting a full body dslr...I am thinking to start with a T2i, but honestly, I just didnt like the plasticy feel of it when I last was in a store (unless I am thinking of the wrong camera).

however, I am looking for a dSLR and like the option of changing lens to start experimenting. My budget is limited...nothing more than 1000.00.

Any recommendations?

I primarily am a photo hobbyist, I am not looking to do one thing (aka, portraits, landscapes, weddings, etc..).

Try hunting out deals on the rebel T2i or T1i, twin lens kits with the 18-55 IS and the 50-250 IS would be an ideal starting point for general use as the two lenses will cover most situations.

The T1i and kit lens can be bought for under $700. The T1i is a great camera and the 18-55 IS is surprisingly good, I think you would be very pleased ;)

Amazon is currently selling the T2i for $800, and the kit lens appears better than the one for the T1i.

I'd like to see a link for that...
$800 is like the going price for the T2i BODY only from most sites and T2i and T1i use the same kit lens last time I checked.

I played with a T1i in store as well and I totally understand your dilemma. The rebel series is generally plasticky.
You can check out this refurbished 40D from B&H Photo
http://www.bhphotovideo.com …_EOS_40D_SLR_Digital.html (external link)
if you want to go the near new/mint route. Usually refurbished is indistinguishable from new. Only down side is the 28-135 wont be wide enough for a lot of people but that's up to personal preference. Because the 35mm equivalent for that lens is like about 45 - 216mm while G11 is 28-140mm. It will definitely get you started though.

Other option is a used 30D (~$300-$350) or 40D ($450-$550) off eBay, and slap a 18-55mm IS and 55-250mm IS for about another $300 and you will have $150-400 left depending on the body and you can get a 50mm f1.8 or a 430EX flash, either of which dramatically gives you more creative room.

I'm with you, but am aiming a bit higher. If I were you, I'd grab one of the deals offered here in the for sale section for used equipment. you might snag a D40 or better.

D40 is an old discontinued budget Nikon, still a nice little camera, but how is it better than a used 30D? Do you mean 40D?

I'm about 50 miles south of Indy, in Decatur county.

You are correct, I was looking at a link on Amazon that I thought included the lens, because it showed the T2i with a lens on it, but the title above it said (body only). I didn't notice the text, and assumed the image represented the product. :-(

I'd get a used 40D($550), a used Tamron 17-50 or Sigma 18-50 Macro($300), and either a tripod and head or a used 430EX. When you have the money go for a 55-250.

Canon 40D
Canon EF 50mm f/1.8, Canon EF-S 55-250mm IS, ∑ 18-50mm f/2.8 EX DC Macro, ∑ 105mm f/2.8 EX DC Macro
580ex II
An off brand tank of a tripod w/ Manfrotto 486RC2 Head

I was about to say the same thing. 40D + Tamron 17-50 + Canon 55-250 + tripod + 430EXII.
