Another great set of images, Miles. The last shot is absolutely terrific! But they're all really really good. It looks as if you were very close to them. I never knew they had ridges on their bill like that - fish caught in there don't stand a chance I reckon...

This particular area in Rockport, TX is most definitely a "target rich" environment. Felt like I was an extra in Hitchcock"s film, The Birds.

Great shots! Rockport is a great place for birding all year long. When we lived in Houston, we used to go there to see the Whooping Cranes in winter.


My Gear: 6D, 7D, EOS-M w EF-M 22 f2 STM and EF-M 18-55 f3.5-5.6 IS STM, 17-40L f4, 24-70L f2.8, 100 f2.8 non-IS macro, 70-200L f/4 IS, 400L f5.6,, Canon 1.4x II TC, Canon Speedlite 430 EX II, Better Beamer. Manfrotto carbon fiber tripod, 2 monopods, Manfrotto ballhead and pistol grip tripod heads.

I see these birds all the time, but never out of the air! I always see them, well, skimming!
Nice light and color on these.. great detail.

You get really close with the 400mm..

Thanks so much! These birds are in a protected nesting area and there must be over a thousand in a 2 acre spot. Getting close is not a problem, being too close is. Had to back up to get many of these shots - no bird suit required.
