Gels for Alien Bees

I have a project coming up and i really want to experiment with gels, i have no clue what gels or adapter to get, can anyone point me in the right direction pretty please

I just clip a sheet to the reflector, the clips the reflectors came with work pretty well as long as you don't leave the modeling light on too long.

with my student discount + free shipping from NAPP, i get them for about $17 each. still cheap imo w/o the discount though.

I use a more expensive but MUCH handier solution for holding gels. First off, I use the UMF (LightMod Mainframe) and a set of GELH (Gel Holders) which are found in the AlienBees web site by clicking on Reflectors and Modifiers, then on The LiteMod Light Modifying System.

The advantages of using this system are important to me. First, the UMF is ventilated so you don't overheat the gels as easily as when you tape them to the standard reflector. Secondly, I have all my gels cut to fit in the cardboard holders (the GELH package). I can very easily put one or more gels into the UMF to modify the colors or the color density. I have not tried to stuff all the holders in at once, but I do believe I have used three gels at once in separate holders.

so Skip, im going to order this tomorrow, along with a snoot. I have a question though...... once the gel is in place what diffusers can you use? i have an alien bees beauty dish and i have their large softbox. Can you attach them as well as the gel holder.

im going to order the lightnod unit frame, the gel holders and the 6 gels for now. Ill see how i get on with the 6 and then go from there.

i was thinking of the snoot but then i saw the barn doors. Do you have experience of either?

If you are using term "diffuser" to mean "softbox", you cannot use that sort of equipment when using the UMF (LightMod Mainframe), as the UMF and softboxes use the same connection to the AlienBees lights.

No.

You might be able to modify things to use an umbrella, but you would have to punch a hole in the UMF (for the umbrella shaft) as well as any gel that you wanted to use (also so the umbrella shaft could be mounted).

The simplest solution would be to bounce the gelled light off a reflector of some sort.
