This little removable piece lets you rotate a filter like a CPL AND have your lens hood on! What a fantastic idea!

Some cameras, some lenses, plenty of gaffer's tape and beer.

Great idea, but it should be a slider, otherwise if you the piece, the hood will be rendered useless.

I like the tokina 100-400mm hood concept as well, where there is a thumb wheel that corresponds to the filter ring and allows you to turn it without removing the hood.

For the price of a new hood I'm tempted to take a couple notches out of mine, plus it'll look a bit like those old Leica hoods.

Very cool Mike. I think I'll need to order some HK knockoffs and give that a try.

So that's what the cutout is for? My Pentax 18-55 kit lens has one and I didn't know what it was for :)

Thanks!

Thanks!

Sony has it too in a couple of their lenses. With a sliding door, that is.

Wow, Canon and Nikon need to step it up! (And Canon finally needs to learn how to make a center pinch lens cap...)

Ebay already knows how. For just a couple of bucks.. A quick search provides you enough choices.
Got myself a couple JJC's. Work more than fine on my lenses.

i completely agree with the center pinch caps. I like those so much better. My Dirty 30 came with one and It's just a pleasure to have that. All their lenses should come with center pinch caps.

Another of the school of thought that it's easier to put center pinch caps on if there is a hood in place?

There's a big hole in your thinking, though. If you are constantly replacing the cap when you are out shooting, sooner or later you're going to miss a cool shot because the cap was on and you couldn't get it off fast enough.

I think you'll find most people that have been shooting for a while, take the caps off at the beginning of the shooting day and don't put them back on until they are completely finished. Yesterday, I took my camera to the railway museum where I volunteer. I took the cap off the lens and left it at home, fifty miles away. I didn't put the cap back on the lens until I broke it down this morning to put away...

no i don't take my caps on and off while I'm out and about but I do like to put them back on when I'm switching lenses. and I don't take my hoods off when they go in the bag. So it's nice to be able to put them on with the hood still on as well as take them off. Plus center pinch caps tend to be easier to hold while putting them back on the lens as well. I seem to never have to fight with them as the standard caps tend to never want to go in as easily.

It's just one of those nice convenient things that I like to have when switching out gear....
