I've noticed that my s30 shoots slow in burst mode when resolution and compression are turned all the way up (Large/Super Fine). When I put the resolution to M1, and once again Super Fine, the camera shoot the appropriate 2 frames per second as mentioned in the manual. So, is the difference in speed a result of a slow memory card or the camera itself? Would a fast card solve the problem?

It's probably an issue with your CF card speed. I use a 12x CF card made by Lexar Media, and I don't get any lag at all.

Anything that will cause processing time to run longer will lessen the amount of photos taken in burst mode. Not always the cf card speed but the camera's ability to process the data. Larger file=longer process time. Slower shutter speed will also affect the burst mode.
