I'm relatively new to OCF and got a ST-E2 when I had my T1i. Now, I have a 7D. So, now that the 7D has a built-in method of firing my speedlites (2x 430EXII), does it make sense to keep the ST-E2, or sell it. Are there any advantages to using the ST-E2 over the 7D's built-in trigger? I realize that one advantage for using the built-in trigger is that there is no need to put anything in the hotshoe. I've done a quick search but haven't come up with an answer.

I wouldn't see any reason to keep the STE2 having a 7D as your only body, I haven't used a 7D but I understand that the menus for OCF are improved and more friendly with more options a la Nikon Commander style that the older STE2 doesn't give you.
I've seen a lot of STE2 for sale so I guess many 7D owners are getting rid of the STE2.
I dont think you cat a lot out of the sell dough, but everything counts

One advantage of the ST-E2 over the 7D's built in Master is it can do High Speed Sync.
Another is that you can use an off-camera E-TTL cable to move the Master off camera, for example if the line of sight from the camera to Slave flash is blocked you can hold the ST-E2 in your free hand and hold it above or to one side of the obstacle.

Well hellbelly's got a point on the extending the range of your STE2 with a ettl cable, I did that once before I switch to radio triggers, but is a surprise to me that the 7D would not do HSS, i am pretty sure it does or am I wrong..

The 7D's built-in flash does not support HSS or 2nd-curtain. So the STE2 would serve a purpose (I don't have one)

You can have HSS/2nd-curtain if you attach a 580EX-II to the 7D, and use that to be the master wireless for other speedlites. For the price of the STE2, I would rather spend a little more and get the 580EX-II (this is for others who don't have the STE2 already), and have an extra flash as well.

I'd love to get rid of my 430s and get some 580s, but unfortunately, that's a little further down my wish list. Fortunately, I got my ST-E2 for around $150 last year. It has been a handy little bugger with the T1i, and I used it once with the 7D before I took the time to learn how the onboard triggering works. I think I'll keep it around a while and do some more experiments with it. I never thought about putting it on a cable to get more flexibility out of it. That's a fantastic idea! It'd be great if someone (FlashZebra, perhaps?) could make a swivel adapter for the hotshoe. I was shooting the other day and wanted to have my speedlite behind me at about 45 degrees to my right, and I couldn't trigger it with the ST-E2. It would have been good if I could have just rotated it to face the speedlite. Oh well. One of these days, I'll get some PWs or something, but I'd like to get much better at OCF before I make that kind of investment.

Thanks to all that answered. You've been quite helpful.

Good idea to keep it. I don't think is worth the money to sell it.
Is disappointing to learn that the 7d wireless control doesn't support hss. I would have thought that was implied as one of the big points of the Canon system is in fact hss capability beyond max sync speed.

Personally i'd just use radio slaves, even though you lose ETTL you don't much need it with static lights.

I'm just starting to use my 7D and a Di866 off camera.

Using the 7D's flash is a bit tricky, also sucks power from the body and does fire a bit of light even when 'off'.

I assume the range is less than the STE2 also.

BTW canon wireless doesnt support 2nd curtain at all.
