I bought a well-used 5D Classic. serial# 2308028xx, with unknown number of clicks. Camera works fine, and the mirror seem to have the reinforcement service done. Only problem is with 1/6,400 or 1/8,000 shutter speed. I searched about it here and on dpreview.com forums, but the answers are inconclusive. Many say it's a sign the shutter is approaching its end of life, others say it may not be. I think it's best to just show you - dark band along the top, but not totally horizontal; metering gets screwed up and ended up underexposing. Both shot with 35/1.4L on a fairly bright day. Has anyone seen the same and know exactly the problem?

I would say that you need a new 5D.

Sure, and thanks for replying. I should correct myself when I said the black band was not parallel. In fact, it does seem to be parallel to the top.

Here are 4 pics at same exposure. From 1/4,000 to 1/8,000. I don't think there's any issue at 1/5,000 or slower, but I put in 1/4,000 as well for comparsion.

1/4,000

Also have a 5d with 23*** serial #, but have not had any problems you're having. Does this happen on all lens you tried or just one particular lens ?

Shutter is gone. You need a new one.

Cheers

Yeah, I think I'll just send it in. The 5D Classic is worth a new shutter.

If you use mirror lock up does the problem disappear?

Just tried it. Same. So, not the mirror, then.

Yeah, it appears to be the shutter then. I think Canon quoted me $250 for a shutter replacement.

Update: Sent it to Irvine. New shutter assembly, new mirror assembly; sensor and other parts cleaned. Turn around time under 2 weeks including shipping.

$180 + $20 shipping + $16.5 tax = $216.5

Very happy.

Awesome. Yeah, when I had the shutter on my 5D replaced, I was amazed at how affordable it was. Canon Factory Service has done top notch work for me
