Hi All

I tried 7D + Canon 100-400 + 1.4x TC (Pins taped so exif will not show TC) combination to satisfactory results but I doubt if I will use this set up again as the Camera hunts a lot for the focus and trust me we miss too many shots in the process.

All taken hand held and only NR applied in PP.

Some sample Pictures:

1. Sea Gull

Works now, good looking shots. Might have to get a 1.4x to try with my 400mm.

Very nice results. Did you try the combo with the IS turned off?

Still, a tcon can be of use sometimes, when speed isn't too important. These look pretty good, Sachin.

Thanks Levina! yes they are useful at times. But trust me I missed some wonderful moments in the process and so I intend to restrict use of it to only occasions when shooting with tripod. Also on many shots the BG looks funny.

In low light the IS helps but when the light is sufficient it can delay focus and with the TC in place it's a double whammy. Keep in mind that in overcast situations or any situation where there is very little contrast any DSLR set to auto focus can struggle to quickly find the accurate focal distance. As a result it will search and can cause images to appear just out of focus or at times grab the background. In these situations try to select a spot on the bird that offers the best contrast or "edge" to help the camera best identify the focal point wanted. It's always best to choose the eye or as close as you can get but if for instance the bird is at profile to you there are many places at equal or very close to the same distance as the bird's eye. These are decisions that have to be made in the viewfinder and will become easier as you get more accustomed to your new camera/lens and TC set up. It's best to use a tripod whenever possible but especially when light is low and if needed find something to use for support when a tripod won't fit the situation.
