Hi guys, I moved on from a Point and shoot to a Digital SLR (Canon 1000D / Rebel XS) - Here's my first picture (with some PP using Light room) - Need loads of advice on what I should be doing to make it better.

First of all, congrats on the new purchase.

Now for a first picture, its not bad. The PP is a bit strong with the contrast but you have kept a bit of separation between your subject and the background and the greens are nice.

The biggest problem is that there is nothing really going on eg background wise to say that there is a story but that will come in with improving on framing/composition.

Take some time out and grab a book which gets mentioned alot, Understanding Exposure which has helped a lot of people on here. It really does help but apart from that, keep on going and see where you get on.

@elysium: Thanks =) and since I just got it (couple of hours back) - I took it in my garden and luckily my cousin was there.. I learned about AV a bit and this was my first experiment. Umm, regarding the PP, it was a one click mechanism (downloaded preset) since I don't have any experience.

Yes, I'll hopefully go out sooner or later to do more experiments. Just want to start in the right direction from start.
