This time of year the last quarter is highest in the sky - but you have to get up before sunrise to see it! So this phase doesn't get as much face time with astrophotographers. Besides, there isn't quite as much scenery on this half of the disk. But the Moon's always worth a shot, here through a 4 inch refractor, ISO 200, T2i. The first is at 900 mm at 1/125 sec and the second with a Barlow at about 3000 mm at 1/10 sec.

I used this little guy from Orion:

It's doesn't take much to buy a good scope for regional lunar shots, but it should be an apo refractor. I love those crisp views.

Thats a great shot Bernoulli ! I'm glad it's the last quarter because by next week it will be going down early and the Perseids meteor shower will not have moon light interference :D ! I'll be in Ft.Davis and hoping for clear skies cause their you can see things happen that you can't see even close to a city :D .

Oh well, no northern lights here in sleepy Arkansas. But there's always something else to shoot.

Bernoullie. Somewhere in another thread you said sorry for boring us with moon shots. Well, keep boring us with them. Thanks, Am.bw!

Let me pontificate on this topic a bit. As senior lunar photographer in these parts I think I’m entitled.

We have a lot of first tries at lunar photography in this forum, but we have very few second attempts! Out of the first tries some are pretty good (focused, not overexposed) and some are not. I bet all of them got better the second and third time around, and we need to see more of those.

The first time I pointed a camera through a telescope, “Hey Jude” was at the top of the charts and the camera was an Instamtic. I had to take the flash cube out. The results weren’t very good but I was hooked. I got better.

As far as seeing the same thing, it’s certainly harder for me to find unique shots of the Moon. I think I’ve reached the limits of my hardware and shot the Moon from just about every angle. I have dozens of high-resolution RAW’s from the past years and I spend most of my imaging time processing these. Even when I take new shots I’m not outside more than ½ hour; that part’s pretty mechanical. Hmmm . . . maybe bigger equipment?

But I would like to see more repeat business for the Moon around here. Many of you that posted once should give it another shot. You might be surprised what you can do with very little equipment.

Beautiful shot. I am one of the people too lazy to get up for the early morning shots. You nailed to focus too! Super sharp. I find that's the hardest part shooting the moon through a telescope.
