Hi folks, I'm in a bit of a quandary and I need your help.

I've set my sights on the EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM (brick IIRC) as a walkabout lens, but given its price, I thought it might be prudent to sell some of my gear to fund the purchase.

My current setup includes:
EF 50mm f/1.4 USM
EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6
EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM
EF-S 10-22mm
Extender EF 2X II

I've decided to drop the extender as it is seldom used, but don't know if I should drop the 50mm and 18-55mm in favour of the 24-70mm - or is there another solution I should be considering?

I'd keep the 50mm as a nice fast prime is always useful. The only one I'd get rid of is the 18-55.

I would drop the extender, IF you dont use it, and the kit and the prime if you have an external flash

I'd wait, buy the lens, and keep all my gear.

All good things come to those who wait.

If it's not the IS version of the 18-55 you probably won't get much for it and you're better off keeping it. I'd probably get rid of the 50/1.4, but I didn't care much for that lens. Otherwise, as others have said just save up for the brick. It'll compliment your existing lenses quite well.

I'd love to have every lens you have except for the 18-55! I'd get rid of that one since you probably would never use it again after getting the 24-70. The Brick may be expensive (relatively) but if you use all of the other lenses then I really wouldn't want to give them up. Maybe just save a little bit longer.

If you're tight on budge, I would have suggested dumping the kit zoom and getting the Tamron 28-75mm but it looks like your eyes are set on the 24-70L so it's a moot point..

I would consider other options. I found the Sigma 30 and a longer prime (60 macro for me, keep your 50) makes a great combo to replace the 24-70 i had. Smaller and faster and sharper. I found an older Sigma 18-50/2.8 for a carry around. It's as sharp at 2.8 as the canon was.

Personally I think the 24-70 is an odd lens to use on a cropped camera. I used it on my XSi and it never really shined. When I use it on the 5D it's a superb lens. If I were you I'd sell your 18-55 and get either the 17-55 or 15-85.
