Hi folks! I was surfing on the Nik Software website and found out that Nik will be releasing an HDR plug-in. It looks interesting and for some of you HDR folks it maybe a nice addition to other HDR software that's out there. Also, Photomatix is in the works for version 4 which is supposed to have better control with ghosting. Enjoy the read. :)

NIK also has some samples posted on their site.

Looks interesting. The hdr application field is certainly getting active.

I looked at the Nik page. While I would like to see some examples of the final release, they have one example (external link) there that I personally would not have used.

Over to the right you can see two puffs that just don't look quite right, and up under the roof line of the tower on the right and the left roofline of the main building, it doesn't look like their app did a very good job of bring detail out of those shadows. Whether that was the look they were going for, don't know.

agreed, the perspective looks all wrong on that, like an M C Esher painting :)

I saw that. I personally wouldn't have picked that preset but, I'm really concerned about how the merging is with the plug-in and how it deals with artifacts.

Agreed, but this is all very good. As little as 2 or 3 years ago there was just about only one choice on the market. Now there are many more, and I would think it's a safe bet Topaz is developing one right now, too. With all these new competitors, it will keep photomatix on it's toes.

If they come out with the next major upgrade plagued with halos and noise, their goose is cooked. Have you ever noticed that many of HDRsoft's competitors all use "NO Halos!" as their main marketing thrust?

Competition can lower prices and increase quality. This is good!

I agree about the "no halo" marketing. I haven't touched my Photomatix software in a long time but, have yet to be impressed by other makers too. I use a lot of Nik software in my workflow and it never disappoints. With that said, I anxiously await their final product. :)

Not really. ;) The only way for me to buy it, is if the product actually works. :)

I'd rather they work on releasing Nik Color Efex and Silve Efex Pro for CS5 64-bit.

Me too. Which is why I haven't upgraded to CS5 yet myself. When it comes to updates, they're a bit slow. :)

I was going to post the exact same thing. It's been a long wait for windows 64-bit and we will wait a bit longer.
