I currently have a 580I, 430I and a st-e2. I'm really new to OCF, just messing around holding the flash in one hand or setting it on an available surface. I'm looking at stepping it up by getting a stand, umbrella, and bracket.

My question is should I just get the impact kit from B&H, http://www.bhphotovideo.com …Flash_Umbrella_Mount.html (external link)

OR

Should I get a good quality stand, bigger umbrella (something larger than the 32" that comes in the kit) and a better adapter (seems like alot of people recommend the Manfrotto adapter for it's better build)

If I get the kit I can learn to use two lights. If I get the single setup, I have a stronger built, bigger umbrella setup that I can learn with and see where/why I would need more light.

I've been reading the single light setup daily and am really impressed with the quality that people are able to produce with just one light.

I'm looking to start out shooting my kids, probably one at a time. I have limited space inside so a full blown studio is out of the question. Most of the time I will be shooting outside, using the umbrella to fill in light where it is needed.

I also already have a small softbox, similar to the lastolite ezybox, that I can use in conjunction with the umbrella if needed. It is something I have had for a while and can never seem to get good results out of. It's not the softboxes fault, it's the fact that I need more practice with it.

Thanks for any insight and info,
Eric

I bought the kit from B&H and just kept one of the stand sets in the box until I got my second light. I still use the umbrellas from time to time and I still use the stands all the time with my alienbees, they are built pretty well and have never had any issues with the kit at all.

You should go for something around 43" for people, two people, or to fill an area of a room with fill light. You need to decided what 32" would be good for. Hope this helps.

That's the kit I have, it's pretty good. If you need a bigger light source you could always put the umbrellas side by side and create a bigger light source. I used the 32" umbrella quite a bit but have been using the Westcott 43" collapsible umbrella more and more now.
