Apart from the Canon software, which I don't like (too clumsy), what other software is there for capturing photos straight from the camera - onto a Windows laptop?

Haven't used that, but I use both their Breeze Browser Pro and Downloader Pro and they're solid products. Download the trial - you'll have 15 days to put it through the wringer.
