Take a look at some of these target images. These are calibration images found at a few different places. I use these as sort of a reference to check my monitor calibration.

Megapixels and high ISO are a digital photographers heroin. Once you have a little, you just want more and more. It doesn't stop until your bank account is run dry.

Your shot in post 41 looks well balanced, but it is also readily apparent as to the fact that the shot was in the shade, solely by the relative coolness of the subject's left side of face.

Yes, it is obviously in open shade. All natural light (but I may have used a reflector.) I don't remember which WB I used in DPP, but often I use "temperature" and adjust to my liking. I had this developed in 8X10 by MPIX and it looks the same. If my monitor was "off", wouldn't this look very wrong? That's all I'm saying.

After all this (and getting my monitor involved), I just went out and tested that WhiBal AGAIN! Honestly, if there is a problem, it is probably how I am using it. If it's a hassle to USE, then I might as well stick to what I've been doing. I believe I used it correctly this time, so I will check the results.

I see "Nap" in the white, but not in the black. I don't know what I am looking at in the 2nd link (HUGE) and the third wouldn't open. :)

Any comment to the point that the 'warmer' shot of the two that I posted was due only to Saturation setting, and not a WB issue?!

The only part that looked "warmer" to me was the shirt, because the second was blue-tinted. I don't know about saturation -- I use "Faithful" in my camera and the saturation is at "0." I did not adjust the saturation in DPP. Are you saying that my monitor over-saturates?

3rd one needs to downloaded and unzipped.

This is it at a reduced size..

No, am not saying monitor oversaturates. I was trying to enlighten you to the fact that all that is 'white balance is not merely that one parameter. I left the White Balance as-is, but was successful in altering your perception of warmth with Saturation setting change. In other words, there might be nothing wrong with the WhiBal card or your monitor or technique, but merely another parameter of the photo.

That is a good point Wilt. You can get nice pumpkin colored skin tones just by changing saturation. Exposure makes a visible difference here too. White point an black point are critically important.

It's a compressed (zipped) file that needs to be uncompressed (unzipped) to be able to view it. If you have a Windows operating system you might be able to open and save simply by double clicking it.

This is short tutorial on how you might "unzip"/extract it from a Windows dropdown menu.....

Yes, I opened it and see everything -- but what is it for? I don't want to print it out, because I already know that my printer is sub-par. Is it suppose to test my monitor collaboration? I can see all the grey variants on the left -- is that what I am looking for?

It has various elements that you can use for reference. The stumbling block is that adaptive vision thing.

How does it appear on your monitor? Are the colors warm or cool? This image should appear neutral as it is intended to be a standard which is color balanced. If it appears to be warm or cool it could be how you percieve the color rendering or possibly your monitor may not be calibrated as you think.

Smart aleck notwithstanding (Polo, as usual), I think it is pretty neutral. The caucasian baby on the far right is a tad warm, but the other caucasian baby is not. (I'm looking at the jpeg.) I had my 17-year-old daughter look at it, too, and she thought it looked normal (I didn't tell her what it is.) I will have my DH look as well.

The colors look good -- the sunflower is a tad warmer than the clock. The very darkest boxes (on the left) are hard to see. The eggs have a slight blue tint, but the other whites do not.

Is this what you (and others) see??

Thanks for the download, Mark. I'll keep it on file. :)

Smart Aleck? Adaptive vision is a fact of our lives. Just trying to keep you from stumbling.
