I've thought about that...
an 80gb SSD would be perfect and it is getting cheaper...around BlackFriday it may be the kind of item, along with the pc, that will be on sale...
I partition my main drive into two partitions, one for OS and programs, and a small 4gb partition for virtual memory and downloads...
I do the same with my 200gb 2nd HD, with a small partition for swap files...and the 2nd main partition for data...as long as I occasionally trash what I don't want and save files to CDs it doesn't get too full...after a year with it i've only used half...

I may end up with an i3 but this i5 is tempting...

My Canon kit 450D/s90; Canon lenses 18-55 IS, 70-210/3.5-4.5....Nikon kit: D610; 28-105/3.5-4.5, 75-300/4.5-5.6 AF, 50/1.8D Nikkors, Tamron 80-210; MF Nikkors: 50/2K, 50/1.4 AI-S, 50/1.8 SeriesE, 60/2.8 Micro Nikkor (AF locked), 85mm/1.8K-AI, 105/2.5 AIS/P.C, 135/2.8K/Q.C, 180/2.8 ED, 200/4Q/AIS, 300/4.5H-AI, ++ Tamron 70-210/3.8-4, Vivitar/Kiron 28/2, ser.1 70-210/3.5, ser.1 28-90; Vivitar/Komine and Samyang 28/2.8; 35mm Nikon F/FM/FE2, Rebel 2K...HTC RE UWA camera

i5 650 gets 400 more points (15% increase) than the i3 530 on cpu benchmark. Keep that in mind while shopping for both.

Yes...I know...budgets are easily expanded to fit one's eyes...in this case this particular set-up is well within it...$575 is only $25-75 more than the cheapest i3 I've seen, and it comes with 8gb vs. 4 found in the i3 systems, itself alone worth the difference...

...and the more I write about it the more I think I should pull the trigger on THIS one...it's on NewEgg a very good reseller
....though I did have good luck 7 years ago with Tigerdirect when I complained that they sent me a new pc that had a broken front cover hinge (to the inputs) right out of the box...thinking back, that was a petty claim, but at the time I thought, it could mean worse inside...nonetheless they sent me a new one in a week...

I STILL use that Sony VAIO as my DVR, which records SD only, but the HD recordings I've made still look great to me, even at standard quality recording level....though when I record SD broadcasts (to watch shows that have commercials I skip), I record in HQ to minimize degregation...

The only other consideration is upgrading to a modern photo quality LCD...my old 22" crt has 2 pc inputs so I can switch between the Sony and the other pc...and at 22" it has a lot of real estate that would be matched only by a 24" wide screen monitor...and as I said earlier, I can use my 50" HDTV for web surfing...which is very convenient, and comfortable...:)

The i5 honestly looks like a good deal if you're not planning on building something yourself. I'd say you should go for it. Of course above all else I'd say build your own, but most people don't have the time or patience, which is fine.

It is a refurb, that is why the low price. See Condition in the specs. Now that doesn't mean it isn't a good deal, the refurbs have been looked over really well, but this one only carries a 3 month warranty.

Yes...the warranty is an issue I've thought about...newegg does have a 2yr warranty/service contract for $80, something I'm considering as well...

Well, with the warranty/support, the total would be about $650

take out the OS for $125 and the system costs about $525, and I doubt that I could buy those parts with those specs for that let alone pay someone to build it...and not have the warranty/support as well...

Okay...Iokay...I'll look up the parts and see if I can do it...gheece, you're right of course, it's about time I built one, given all the thriftshop specials I've refurbished...this P4-HT was found in habatat for humanity restore and cost less than $100 after adding a HD, memory, vid-card and upgrading the cpu...the only labor I paid was to have a local builder install the cpu for $20
I'll get back to ya...:)

thats not true

retail CPUs come with 3 year
motherboard can have lifetime warranty, depends on brand/type
memory usually lifetime
optical drive usually a 1, but dvd burners cost 25 bucks, so its no issue
hard drive depending on brand 3-5 years
video card also lifetime but depends on type and brand
case usually 1 year, but is there anything to actually break in case?

also if you shop smart, the components will be better quality then the junk OEM throw into store build machines.

I think you could build for about $525 for parts, just look for some deals and check out the combo deals to save money. I saw an i5 650 deal that needed a PSU and DVD drive, but had everything else for about $465.

Fry's often has crazy combo deals, couple months ago I picked up AMD Athlon II X4 640 plus Biostar 780G board for 100 bucks. I sold the board for $70 and basically had a brand new Quad core 30 bucks, paired it up later with Gigabyte 890G board and my new server/renderbox was born
