Sorry for the newbie question, I've been searching and reading around for a while. I decided that I want 50D, but with the rumors of a 60D coming out in the near future I don't know how this could affect the 50D's price. I don't want to pay $1100 for it and then see it going for $900 2 months later.

The $1100 is the amazon price for it with the 28-135 lens, I would much better prefer a 24-105 L, but for now the 28-135 will have to do because the other lens I plan on buying with the camera is the Canon 10-22 because 24mm isn't wide enough for a crop body in my opinion.

Anyway I want this camera at least before November meanwhile my XTI will do, if you guys don't think that the price will go down that much I would probably get the 50D now.

Again sorry for posting this kind of thread, I'm not an experienced photographer but I am an experienced forum user and I know it can be annoying to see 20 new threads like this everyday. I try to lurk as much as possible and to keep the noobness to a minimum but since this is more a matter of opinion that actual info I can look up, I had to make the thread.:o

I picked up a used 50D from B&H for $700... You wouldn't know it was used from the way it looks. My suggestion would be to pick one up used from a reputable camera store that will give you a 30 day warranty... Stay away from eBay for such a big ticket item...

I would not hold out waiting for a latest version, you're just depriving yourself and nobody has said a 60D was even coming out.

So, get what is available now, have fun, and learn.

Like all other technology, there will be a continal progression of better, faster cheaper camera bodies.

That said, the 60D has not been announced. If it is announced this fall, it'll be in limited supply through the holiday season and they'll be selling at 95% or more of MSRP.

What would it be worth to you to be able to learn to use your camera now and be able to take nice pictures over the holidays rather than hope for a new body that may or may not be released?

If depreciation is a huge concern for you then take a look at an older body - I saw used 20D's for $225 locally today. Even when a new body is announced, the 20D won't drop that much more. You can either sell the old body when you upgrade or keep it as a backup.

I'm not sure what will be the new features on the 60D as compared to 50D.
Might be a mickey-mouse ver. of 7D.

But if you are really keen on photography and do not have a camera now, you should go grab the one that suits your budget and start learning.

Take it as a hobby and interest rather than an investment. If the camera suits your needs, then you do not need to sell it or upgrade to the newer model.

In that way, you do not lose money. Probably just a small rental fee.

Just buy what you need now. All the talk of prices going way down is generally BS. This is more true with bodies than lenses, but you will still get your moneys worth from the experience and photos you took instead of waiting to get a camera body. People put WAY too much emphasis on having the latest and greatest camera body and not enough on purchasing quality lenses IMHO. Look at the prices on the 5D bodies which have been holding pretty steady for a while.

On another note, lens prices don't go down much with a new variant either. The 70-200 IS version I is going for more than it was going for a year ago on the used market... When a new version comes out, the demand for the old one goes up because it looks like a "deal" and it generally costs just as much or more as before the new version was released.

The 50D may be all you need. Recently, I thought about trading up to a 5D (older version) and after comparing many features such as screen resolution, speed, etc., I decided to stay where I was. The 10-22mm is a sweet lens on this camera, good choice in my opinion.

You can't take pictures with a camera you don't have, and there's nothing more than wild guesses and unfounded speculation as to when the 60D may be announced (if ever). You can either sit around with the camera you have for who knows how long, or pay your money and take your chances.

Wait one more week before buying the 50D. There is an interesting note on Canon Rumors about August 11. A replacement for the 50D (60D) will likely cost a lot more for several months than a discontinued 50D.

The 50D is a great camera, you would really like it. The best chance for a real bargain is to check your local stores that might be discontinuing the 50D. I purchased an XSi kit last March from our local Sears store for $372.00 including sales tax. Deals do happen.

My widest lens is the 24-105mm and I have never had a situation where I needed something wider. I use a flash for low light. Get a flash, a 430 EXII at the minimum, you will need one.

We are on the same situation My camera since 2006 is a 400D. It has shown wear and tear but I feel it can hold out for one more year. I have been looking for possible replacement, a 7D or 50D. I'm in no hurry, but if the 60D comes out it will be good. 50D or even 7D price may go down. Or if the 60D features will be awesome, I may buy it.

...50D or even 7D price may go down...

I'm no expert market analyst, but I wouldn't count on the release of the 60D (if/when it happens) driving the price of the 7D down. The 7D is a more advanced (and expensive) camera and wouldn't be competing in the same market segment. That would be akin to postulating that the release of a new Rebel might cause the price of the 1DIV to drop.

Since you already have a 450d, I'd wait for the 60d announcement, if it doesn't happen before November then go for the 50d. That way you have covered all bases, you never know the 60d could come in at a competitive price.

Yeah, I'd certainly hold my breath, waiting for the 60D. This has been being hashed about here for almost a freakin' year. Like others have said, buy and shoot. Now. Waiting to chase technology, and the lowest price is sure to drive nothing, except you crazy.

That is exactly the same boat I'm in, had my 400d since April 2007 and been thinking about a 50d or 7d as an upgrade, hopefully the rumours of announcement around the end of month or early september are true, let's see what the future brings.
