I just got back from 4 weeks vacation including 1 week in Newfoundland. Here are a couple of puffin shots a photo life list addition for me.

1. Puffin - Village of Elliston on Bonavista Bay - Took this after ~ 3 hour wait for one to land on the peninsula we were on.

2. Puffin Colony - Witless Bay Ecological Reserve - Taken from a bobbing zodiac! :D

These birds must be a joy to observe... they don't look real, like "stuffed toys" :)... excellent shots, Stephen... I was wondering where you were "holed up."... good to see your work again.

Wish we had some of those here. Were they making any noise?

I was wondering where you were Stephen, looks like you were out on an incredible adventure. That first one is an especially awesome shot, great composition and timing. I could easily become a Puffin junky, such interesting birds.

Good shots, Stephen. All my puffin shots are from boats, but not nearly as good as these.

Great shots! Are they hard to get close to?

Thanks Mitch. While I was close to them they seemed to sometimes make a low moaning type sound.

Thanks Steve it only took me one photo to make me a Puffin junky. :D

Thanks Stan. Yes a bobbing boat isn't too good for puffin photos.

Thanks Rob. We waited for the birds to land on the edge of the peninsula but we stayed back until they did. After that they were fairly tolerant of your approach if you moved slowly and kept low.

Welcome back Stephen, Love the first shot with the habitat. Did they land on your side? Extremly hard to get good shots at Witless when shooting from a boat. Tried that some three times and always left frustrated.

Thanks Rick. Yes they landed on our side after a nearly 3 hour wait but well worth it! My daughter and I only had 1 day there so we trie to make the most of it.

There were only 1 or 2 birds at a time but we had about 30-40 minutes with them near sunset. Temp had dropped to the lows teens from the mid 20s the day before and the wind had picked up. Here's a video of Pro Photographer Megan Lorenz, taken by her friend Stephen Oachs. It'll give you an idea of the wind's strength.
