Appears to be quite a price difference between the Tamron and Canon 17-85mm Lens. Is Tamron quality in the same ballpark as Canon, which will make it a cost effective purchase?

I have seen some VERY dynamic photos from that lens. Canon 20D w/ 18-55 Lens Kit, 6 gigs CF Cards
