My 580II quit on me in the middle of a wedding. When I took the Chinese made Powerizer batteries out they were burning hot. Now my flash wont turn back on. Does anyone know how to fix this :(

Seems like the flash over heated.

I'm guessing you have tried new batteries so they need to go to a service center.

I read that a trip to the svc center often hits $200. Hopefully yours, if new batteries aren't the cure, won't be that much. That's almost a 430 EX II.

I thought the 580EX II had built in thermal shutdown...

The thermal shutdown is there to protect the flash tube area. "Burning hot batteries" could damage components in areas not covered by thermal overload protection.

moral of the story: do not be lazy and use regular batteries instead. If you insist on using lithium ion do not use the chinese made kind and rotate your flashes out!

Is the moral of this story - If you spend thousands on cameras and more thousands on lenses, don't save a buck on your batteries?

For the most part, yes. Except for those darn overpriced Canon batteries. ;)

Review of "Powerizer" batteries"

http://sackheads.org/~jimmie/battery/analysis.html (external link)

Capacity appears to be significantly below the claimed 2000 mAh

Since most of the discharge curves now occur in the 1.0V - 1.1V range, it's not surprising that some devices immediately alert the user of a low battery condition even if the batteries came directly from the charger. My Nikon CP950 camera falls into this category. For those devices, these batteries are no longer useful. For this reason, I cannot recommend Powerizer brand NiMH batteries.

wow, yeah, batteries are way too important to the functioning of your gear to be buying the cheap versions.

This just sealed the deal on me not ordering an off brand battery for my camera (T2i), lol. I will pay the extra 30 bucks for a Canon brand battery... lol.
