I have a 17-55 2.8 heading my way as we speak along with a 85 1.8...i already have a 50 1.8 although im not too thrilled with it...dont get me wrong it can take some amazing pictures but i feel it the AF on it is a hit or miss. I was wondering whats recommended for a prime in the 30-50mm range? canon or sigma? im just a hobbyist and wont be going pro anytime soon. i have looked at hundreds of pics but cant decide...any insight would be great!

I'm not an expert, but I think before you can select a lens you need to decide what you want to shoot. For example, insects, cars, birds, kids, sports, etc? Then you can select a lens that best fits the situation.

I'm not really a prime user so I may not be the best to answer, but I will offer this: I found the 50/1.8 to be an awkward length on my 400D - kinda stuck in no-man's-land, too long, too short. So I suspect that 30 would be much more useful. 30mm on a cropper is very close to being the same FL as 50 on a full frame.

Sigma 30 is the way to go. Awesome lens, good price. I had one when I shot crop and absolutely loved it

i was set on the sigma 30mm 1.4, but the rumored canon 35mm 1.8 has me very excited.

Sigma 30 1.4 never really worked for me due to AF failure - I tried 7 and all of them had front focus/back focus, it's a great choice if you get a proper working one though, or can use it with micro adjust.
I picked the 28 1.8 and quite happy with that.
Right now my favorite kit to bring is 11-16, 28 and 50-135. That trio goes really well together.

wow, seven copies. i'm sure it was frustrating after a couple of tries, but how come you didn't just send one in to sigma to get it calibrated?

I tried 4 in one store and 3 in another. I live in the Netherlands so it's a different service center and one store actually recommended not sending it in because apparently they would want to have my camera also and they were just doing a move of the service center thing, which would make it take a few weeks.
To Sigma's possible credit, I did get the feeling that a few of those lenses were already "rejects" and would probably work fine with some micro adjust.
At that time I really began to question my camera though, my other lenses were dead on- apart from the 17-50 which only slightly front focuses in tungsten light.

Thought about getting the sigma this week but It got me to thinking should I just sale my 7d and get a 5d2. I'm just buying more lenses to compensate not having a FF.

I like my copy of the 35f2. It is sharp wide open and does even better stopped down.
I use it on my T2i. If you want a faster lens, and don't mind the weight and cost, the 35f1.4 is a fine lens.
If you don't mind a wait, then hang in there for a lens update... but who knows when or if it will come.
I am a Sigma fan, and own their 50f2.8 macro - a great lens. However, their 30 has been reported to need calibration in many cases - and this does not always work for everyone.

Oh and not to get off subject. Sorry  I would recommend a Canon 85mm 1.8 or Siggy 30mm 1.4. :)

I just got the Canon 28 1.8, much lighter than the Sigma, faster focusing and my copy is sharp and accurate at 1.8 out of the box
