Is it possible to plug in an external display to a 5D Mark II or 7D such that when you review photos on camera, the output is sent to the display (or mirrored to the display)?

I read the manual and it seemed like the HDMI output only worked for video. I'd test this, but I don't have any HDMI devices, personally.

you can shoot tethered thru USB to a laptop or what have you - and the photo displays on the computer immediately as I recall via "EOS Utility" (thats what its called right?)

I don't want to do tethering with EOS Utility or Lightroom. I simply want to be able to plug in say an HDMI monitor or some other small standalone display to the camera and review photos on camera and output to the display.

Tethering can do this somewhat, but you're technically putting a copy of the photo on the computer you are tethered to, and it does take some time to process (not immediate) since it's loading the RAW on the computer.

Just use the HDMI port for image and movie playback using the camera viewing controls. It's covered on page 53 and 58 of my 5dm2 manual.

1Dx, 1DM4, 5DM2, 7D, EOS-M, 8-15L, 17-40L, 24 TSE II, 24-105L, 50L, 85L II, 100L, 135L, 200L f/2.8, 300L f/4, 70-200L II, 70-300L, 400Lf/5.6

well looks like you got your hdmi answer already...

But your question made me wonder... Last time i shot tethered - for a portrait shoot - i didnt feel like it lagged for file transfer... Of course i didnt have nearly the 5d2 file size... Maybe thats the difference... I will have to hook it up and pay attention to that.

An A/V cable is included with the 7D. Simply plug it into the A/V Out jack on the left side of the camera and connect the color coded RCA jacks to the composite receptacles on your standard definition TV. Turn the camera on and press the replay button. Both stills and video (with sound) can be viewed.
