I am an idiot. Yesterday when returning from a trip I set my camera bag on top of my car while loading my suitcases in the back. When I set the bag on the roof of my car I thought "don't forget that bag up there." You can see where this is going. About a mile from the airport parking lot a guy pulled up next to me at a stop light and said he thought he saw a bag fly off my car three lights back. My heart sank and I pulled a quick U turn. I searched the road but found nothing. This morning I called the police and they offered no help. I am going to place an add in the lost and found. I'm holding out little hope.

The bright side is I didn't loose any really good lenses. I was traveling with my old backup lenses.

I owned the camera for two years and took thousands of photos with it. The only decorations hanging on my apartment walls are photos I took with my 10D. It's like breaking up with a girlfriend. Everytime I look up I'm reminded of my 10D and i think of it out in the world in someone elses dirty hands. I kind of hope the fall broke it. The only way I will be able to get over this is by going to B and H to look at strippers... I mean the 20D.

it's a sign. you secretly wanted to get a new camera and you knew that was the only way you could justify it. :-)

When I pile a camera bag onto my car, I have to make sure that I don't make the similar mistake. As a result, the only temporary place I will put the bag is directly in front of the driver's windshield. I can't possibly forget it there.

I'm wondering if it even survived. These things are pretty delicate. You can be pretty sure and lens in the bag is gone, either broken or the elements have moved. The mirror in the camera is also pretty delicate, and impact like that will break the mirror and dislodge any parts.

Time to save, FM forums have lots of good cameras at good prices, it's quite a safe place to buy used...

Sorry to hear your bad news, Dave. Same thing happened to me once, except it was my tennis bag. I went back and found it. Guess no one wanted my sweaty tennis outfit. Check with your auto insurance, or even homeowner's policy, to see if it may be covered. Would help pay for that 20D.

Thanks for the nice comments. Does anyone know how to figure out how many photos a camera has taken by the file number? The last picture taken was 320_2013.

My 10D seemed to have nine lives. I carried it over 1,000,000 miles. It went flying with me every trip I've taken over the past year and a half (http://www.pbase.com/rbndave/pictures_from_my_job) (external link). I've accidently left it on airplanes and in hotel rooms. It's been dropped, rained on, and coated in sand. I treat my equipment roughly. I always knew that my camera would meet its demise in some unnatural way. I wish it was a better story than, "it flew off the roof of my car."

Luckily I've been saving up for a laptop computer. I am planning on buying a new 20D with my laptop fund and putting off the laptop purchase until later this year. I'll have a new camera for my yellowstone/grand teton trip this september. That's pretty exciting, but I wish I could have used 10D longer and kept it as a backup. I don't feel too terrible. I think I got my money's worth out of that camera in the two years I owned it.

Man Dave that really stinks. I feel for you but I must admit the worse I've ever done is drive away with a coffee sitting on top of the car.

Are you insured for this?

My life is like one big RAW file....way too much post processing needed.

Some people will do anything to justify an upgrade!!!

Seriously, I am sorry for your loss, and if it's any consolation, we all have one episode like this under our belts... It is called experience. I hope your next camera is equally well used before it meets its end!

Tough luck mate - I've done the same with a pair of binoculars and once saw someone driving along with a wedding cake on their car roof.

Like Sheldon says, check your insurance.

I already checked my insurance. My camera is covered under my renters insurance if it is stolen, not if it is damaged or lost through my own negligence. I should have insured my camera but never got around to it. It's one of those things that goes with traveling. I've known a lot of pilots that have lost laptops, cameras, PDAs. I knew it was going to get lost sooner or later. The day I lost my camera we had flown 5 legs and hadn't had a break in 9 hours. I was tired and hungry. Normally when I get to my car after a trip I load my bags in the back and then start the car. The day I lost my camera I started the car first because I wanted get the AC cranking. When I reached in to start the car I set my black camera bag on the roof of my black car and the rest is history.

I am pretty much over it already anyhow. I'm going to check my company webpage and see if I can pic up any work on my days off next week.

I had what turned out to be a false alarm with my 10D. We made several stops on our 5 hour drive home on the last day of our vacation. Each stop I took my camera bag out of the trunk and put it back in the same place each time we got back in the car. When we got home, I popped the trunk and then got some stuff out of the back seat to put in the garage. WHen I went to the trunk my camera bag was gone. My heart sank. I felt ill. Two hours back to the last stop. I was ashen when I walked in the house. My wife noticed my condition. I told her about the bag. Turns out she brought it in from the trunk when i was in the garage--knowing how I didn't like to leave it unattended for 10 seconds!

Sorry to hear that. It really sucks.

I have had similar expirences. I left my Olympus XA on the roof once and saw it slide off and smack into the curb on the first turn!

Also I once backed over my camera bag with my EOS 650 in it! It still lives though a bit smoosched.

Finally my first digital a Canon A50 just dissapeared sometime after a long 4 day with a 2 leg commute home.
