I wish I could wait for the 5D, but I am planning a photo trip to Yellowstone in Sept. I need a new camera before that. Plus, the 5D is a little out of my price range.

Embdude,

Thanks for sharing. Your stories made me feel better. You must understand the four day trip funk. I was actually finishing six days in a row. A two day in front of a four day. Should have known better and left the expensive toys at home. I also had some nice photos on the CF card that will now never make my gallery; boston at night and asheville mountains with fog.

Dave I am sorry to hear of your loss but, what the hell are you thinking sitting your camera bag on top of the car? I don't understand how people lose a camera, drop a camera, bang it into a concrete wall. I have had a pro grade camera of one sort or the other for 13 years and never has my cameras suffered from any sort of trauma. You have to learn to take care of your equipment.

Luckily I've been saving up for a laptop computer. I am planning on buying a new 20D with my laptop fund and putting off the laptop purchase until later this year. .

What kind of laptop or at least specks would you recomend?

My laptop of 2.5 years has suffered a video processor failure that will cost $600 to fix. It was a Compaq 2800T and was a very nice system. Now im torn between getting a new one for around $1000 or just fixing it....

embdude,

I didn't have a laptop picked out yet. After doing some research, I think you can get a good deal by watching best buy sales. I used to be diehard dell, but I don't think dell has the best laptop prices. Laptops are a comodity now. Most of them are made in the same korean factories. It's just a different case slapped on at the end of the assembly line. Decide what specs you want and then watch the sales. I was planning on replacing my desktop with a laptop and keeping my CRT monitor for photo editting.

That's harsh dude. Have you ever lost your wallet, or maybe your keys? It was the same thing for a camera. My camera bag is carried as often as my wallet. The only way I remember where I set is is by habit only. It's kind of like when you forget to put on your watch and you feel nakid. I carried that camera well over 8000 miles per week. My camera has been in hundreds of hotel rooms, shuttle busses, hotels, and vans. I've climbed three mountains with my camera. It's been set up in the middle creeks with a tripod and remote. Point is, my camera has been around. This was bound to happen sooner or later.

Yeah maybe it is harsh, but I have (also) had a semi-to-pro grade camera in my possession since 1971 and NEVER has any of my cameras, or accessories suffered ANY trauma whatsoever. Never lost anything, left anything at the airport, side of the road, (okay) on top of the car or whatever. Nada. Nyet. Nothing.

However, I do, truly sympathize with your loss. Heck, people have left BABIES on top of their car before. We are not perfect creatures. We screw up.

I have a Toshiba Laptop and wouldn't trade it for anything and it is almost 3 years old. Great for digital photos and anything else, and I got it at Best Buy on sale with awesome rebates, I ended up paying around $600 with the rebates. They will be having great sales on these things starting around October.
