Just wondering if we have any Manfrotto Nano 5001B (external link) owners here.

I was thinking of picking up 2 of these stands for PORTABLE work. Thoughts?

Probably perfect for indoor work with Speedlights and Umbrellas.

Would definately need weights for outdoor use. Only 3.3lb capacity though. Not what I'd call robust by any means.

I use them for the quadra, along with manfrotto weights.

The fotprint is larger then you think and it will take quite a bit of force tip the stand over with just a speedlight or a quadra head.

I just sold mine. It's very portable. It's the perfect stand for speedlights or anything that's similar in weight and size.

i noticed that you had both the LP604 and the 5001B. What is the difference between the two asides from pricing? Which one did you like better?

And why are you selling your strobist gear?

would you recommend them for someone using them in an outdoors setting? I will be using them with a shoot through umbrella (not sure if i will get the double folds or not)

I use the previous version nano, but its basically the same unit with a different model number. They are great and the best option out there for a super portable strobist setup! A collapsible umbrella and a 580EX II and youre golden! I carry it all in a bag thats about maybe 2.5 feet long. If you are fortunate enough to have an Elinchrom Quadra its be the ULTIMATE portable kit!

And why are you selling your strobist gear?

Aside from pricing, there's a half inch extra on the LumoPro (you can see this as bad if you want absolute compactness or good if you want extra 1/2" height) and a barely noticeable difference in weight. After having the chance to use both, the LumoPro was less wobbly. I didn't get to test which was sturdier, though, so I can't comment on that. The legs on the Manfrotto also had quite a bit of play even when the knob for the legs was locked tight compared to the LumoPro. Anybody who owns one know exactly what I mean.

As for why I'm selling my strobist gear, I haven't used them for almost a year. I recently bought another BXRi and I find myself needing a light meter. I would also like to buy another boom kit. I'm really trimming down my gear especially because the money can go to something else I really need.

So I assume that you'd recommend the lp lighstand more than the manfrotto 5001b

You are right! That really does seem the best kit out there. I dream of having a quadra but it's expensive! The einsteins seem to be the better bang for me right now.

If you're asking me which of the two I like more, yes, I like the LP more but only because of the price. When you compare them both (the wobbly issue, play on the legs, etc.) the difference is almost unnoticeable. Both have it, but the Manfrotto comes up a little short. If the Manfrotto was the same price as the LP, I'd get the Nano. Think of it this way, the weight will add up if you have more than one and you will definitely start to notice it.

I wouldn't hang that Einstein on top of these kind of lightstands, though. I've tried it with the B800, D-Lite 4 it, BXRi 500, Vivitar 285HV, LP120, 430 EXII, YN460, SB-800... One thing that's always constant with each of those trials was that it could only handle speedlights. I think the Quadra is an exception because it's smaller/lighter than most speedlights. I think that's what Ben was trying to say.

Lol! I'd never ever hang a Einstein on this. I have my manfrotto bac stands for that. I do however, want an extra ultra portable kit!

So it'll be 2 lp604s and 2 westcott double fold umbrellas. I'm pairing these with my Nikon sb28s, and the pixel td383 power packs.

I got the Nano as I needed something to throw in a carry on and use with my alienbees and umbrellas when I travel. Works well, holds the weight of the AB800 and umbrella with no problem.

That's weird because mine could never hold my B800s. Even with the legs spread all the way out and a 43" umbrella, it was a sneeze away from disaster. It was very, very top-heavy.

Whoa! I wouldnt put a full monolight on that stand! Not if youre intending to also have it hold a modifier! That was why I suggested the Elinchrom Quadra! Its lighter than a 580EX II and about the only "higher powered" strobe Id trust on that stand!
