I really like the subjects in this picture but being a noob I am not sure how to improve it in photoshop. Artistically or otherwise. Was hoping you guys can give me some ideas. These are actors at a ren faire.

It's a nice snap. I wouldn't change it, though if you really want to play make it a bit warmer and increase the contrast, and maybe brighten it a little - brightness not exposure.

I'd hit the ones on the left and in the middle

The exposure of the girls looks about right to me, so I selected them and made them a separate layer.

Then I reduced the brightness on the background layer.

This was a 5 minute quick-fix, I could have been a bit more careful on the selection with more time.

EDIT: I think I like it better with the background a bit darker:

My edit that I made out of boredom. Made the image a little clearer overall.

I acquired an expensive camera so I can hang out in forums, annoy wedding photographers during formals and look down on P&S users... all the while telling people it's the photographer, not the camera.

Just out of curiosity, I dropped this into Oloneo (currently free in Beta). I cannot upload the final image from my currently location, but I got an impressive image in about 30 seconds. If you want to try it out, here are the numbers I used:
In High Dynamic Tone Mapping section:
TM Strength: 26; Fine Exposure: 0.33; Contrast: 10
In Low Dynamic Tone section:
Saturation: 105; Color Temperature: 7174
All other settings were left at the default values. I am not a big fan of the HDR look, but the subtle changes that are possible with this application are impressive.

Opened the shadows slightly... added some slight tonal contrast and saturation. Velvia, anyone?

BTW, why is this wench recoiling in horror? Do you have a mole or something? And where was this fest? Looks familiar.

Chas- Well the one recoiling was the only one who clearly understood that i was stealing her soul with the portrait device. The one in the middle though cute is clueless and the one on the left is trying to give me her radiant smile hoping she can flirt her way into getting me to release her soul.

what do you mean by you opened the shadows. which doohikey did you move?
This is at the NY ren faire.

Kolor Picker- I really like your edit. Can you explain more what you did? Also to help you relieve your boredom I will graciously give you more pictures to edit.

I actually used NIK Viveza out of lazy habit, but it could have been done just a simply with Image > Adjustments > Shadows/Highlights. (Or Levels or Curves...)

NY's a big place.... What city, what venue? Looks the one in Tuxedo. Was there 30 years ago.

I did not like that the one on the right was the only one screaming.

hmm.. sorry for the slow reply, didn't think this was gonna go anywhere. I think I may have used...
1. shadows/highlights to open up shadows and darken highlights.
2. Nik tonal contrast & lighten/darken center filters, but doable in photoshop just as well.
3. Curves in Lab mode to adjust saturation.

... think that's it. nothing too complicated.
