My copy of Norton has gone bad, I don't know why something has done funny and it needs reinstalling.

Its actualy asking me to do it.

Following some advice from a symantic tech, who sent me a very comprehensive and detailed email, I first tried a clean system boot.

BAD IDEA!

It kill all my internet access, I could connect with my ADSL, or my Dail up, but niether firefox or IE would connect

Iv just had to do a system restore so I can read some more advice on un-installing Norton (it didn't like it when i tried to last time) and then download it and re-install it.

If anyone buys Norton from thier online store I highly recomend the extra download insurance!

You are right, Windows is wonderful. LOL

By the way, what is "Norton"?

oh that's right, XtraPain needs to have separate security program to try and compensate for its vulnerabilities.

Windows is wonderful!! You got me convinced.

Any way, OS bigots aside, II seem to be back to normal operation.

Any other Norton users here who have experianced similar problems?
Im wondering if I should stick with it when it comes up for renewal, or switch to something else?

Best thing I ever did with regard to computer security is ditch Norton and get BitDefender. It has yet to fail me!

System restore has been a boon in the past for me as well..

I've had times when it duid stuff that was ,.. well ,. a little odd...

But on the whole it does a great job!

As for Norton,..
I find that I can't stand any Symantec products...
They are to me insidious in how they install themselves with literally as many as dozens of running processes ans services.. with little to no option to turn them off without hacking your own registry...

It's been a long time since I will allow one of there products on one of my PCs...
In essence.. the Symantec products seem as if they are designed to be installed on run on computers with no other purpose other than to run Norton software.. Symantec never expected anyone to actually use there PCs for anything but running Norton Utilities...

there "tight integration" (rread hopelessly blaoted and invasive) installation makes removal difficult,. and installation hugely risky to the stability of a computer.

In a nutshell.. to quote Mr. Scott
"The more complicated you make the plumbing,..
..the easier it is to stop up the works
"

Seems on averadge "The Sheild Pro" is top Dog.. followed by Bit defender and Trend Micros PC Cillin...

Also,. BitDefender has a limited free version,. this is what I am using currently.

I've heard so many horor stories about Norton I've never used it. I had used McAfee on our home PC (it came with the computer). It did okay until recently--we've had this pop-up show up dozens of times a day; McAfee would find it, but couldn't clene, delete or quarantine it. So I installed trend-micro's PC-cillin. It wiped out the pop-up and a few dozen nasties McAfee never found!

I have been using Norton since 1998 and Never had any problems but 1......
That was when one of their "Live Updates" was faulty and this was fixed within 3 days.
I now use Norton Internet Security 2005 and all is working well.
I have always installed my Norton products while in "Safe Mode"....it avoids alot of conflicts.
Never had a virus attack my computer....Norton has caught them all.

it's not that Norton or Symantech is bad....it's that they're so popular it's the first thing the "evil doers" go after. I've found that Panda's Titanium works wonderfully, and the added bonus is that they have a FREE online scan, so if something has gone amiss, at least there's an uncorupted version you can use!

HERE (external link) is a link to the free online scan

Thank you CDS!

Under services in MSCONFIG Symantic has at least 6 that load on start up

I would to see the list generated by running something like Norton System works.
Maybe they call it system works because it becomes your system and is the only thing that works?
