Has any customers or seniors ever stated that they had weird catch lights in their eyes? (when doing a clamshell lighting? Say with 2 umbrella’s - > me not so much

Just curious, I think we as photos are super critical vs normal customers/clients , so is it really worth it for your flow?

I think its one of those things that is somewhat insignificant on its own, but really "completes" the photo when taken in context with all of the other technical aspects. a proverbial cherry. If you're catering to the higher end of the market, cherries are essential, at least in my opinion.

Ive screwed around with DIY's and they simply do not get the look that the eye lighter gives. Ive got a lastolie triflector that im going to sell. If anyone wants it make me an offer i cant refuse and its yours It does a decent job but It doesnt do what i want it to do.

The one Tiff made with get the catch lights in the bottom of the eyes, but its not going to wrap and funnel the light like the Eyelighter. The trick is the angle and the 30x30x30 wrap. Ive seen it in action. Great product so im going to step up especially with my limited space i have to use.

With this product its 3-4 lights and your set. main is overhead, reflect up with the eyelighter, 2 kickers and if you want to really knock it out, put a hair light on it. Ive been searching for a chineese knock off, really anything, its just not on the market. This guy has the patent. and the material he uses is very similar to the larson reflectors which are unbelievably good.

Exactly! I know a ton of big $$ photogs who have made their own knockoffs instead of paying the $$.

Mike, glad you are at peace with buying it but I really don't see all that much difference with my DIY and the eyelighter.....of course I only use two lights on it so maybe if I upped the number it would be different.

So I watched the videos of the eye catcher, looks like a great product.. how much is this thing?

Advantages I see this reflector product does Is: provide bottom half lighting without weird catch lights.

Has any customers or seniors ever stated that they had weird catch lights in their eyes? (when doing a clamshell lighting? Say with 2 umbrella’s - > me not so much

Just curious, I think we as photos are super critical vs normal customers/clients , so is it really worth it for your flow?

@ tiff, nice DIY bottom half clam shell reflector

Pham

let the video load and go to video and watch the last 40 seconds. grab the slider and move it frame by frame. You will see what he did. Really magical and vey simple. He is using grids and a softliner for fill. Awesome stuff.

Catchlights are very important to me. This big softbox im using has to be up pretty high or else that catch lights are horrendous. I put them well behind the light line to avoid it. Octo's, ring lights, umbrellas make great catch lights because they are round in nature as opposed to a square box in a round eye.

Speaking of octo's........Killer price at tallyn's right now. check it out for the photogenics an their truckload sale:eek:

Strike 1 & 2

City wont let me put up an outbuilding at 30x40.

Has to be stick built and look like a garage (match house) no larger than 28x32.

Permit costs are Ridiculous. Cant Put in a bathroom w/o adding a seperate septic system and tank. Wont let me run a line and tap into existing system. Crazy stuff they want done. Ever price a separate septic system:rolleyes:

Only way i can do it is to convert our existing garage which is part of the house to the studio (great idea because i can tap into systems in the house and add extra bath, costs will be less than 15K ) and build a separate garage. This will probably put this project in the 40-50K range. Not sure yet. But if that's the case, the ol city screw ball may send me back to the dugout.

Well patented, I guess. Tiff's DIY is the best I've seen. I am actually surprised that some of you Photoshop wizards don't just add that catchlight in post. It seems to me that would be easier, and you could place it perfectly every time.

Dave...there is a big difference in a photoshop catchlight being added as opposed to a natural catchlight there from an eyelighter. So far I have always been able to tell the difference.

You can do the eyes in post. No big deal there.

What i like about this eyelighter is the light wrap and the evenness of it, the funneling of the light past your subject, the catch lights are very cool (like Tiffs), but most impressive to me is how you can overexpose by 2/3 and wash your skin of imperfections while still keeping some detail and the skin. NO shadows in the zits. They clean up very easy and minimal skin softening needed

This is set up every time with the correct ratios to make it work within your 30-36" window. Ive seen it done with the 4x6 softboxes and its extremely impressive. It can also be done with a 36x48 and that's the one i baught. Also seen it done with a 64" parabolic with a fabric diffuser and a westcott 60" octo......that one blew me away as well

Bobby ive been looking for a chinese knock off on Ebay with no luck. Cant find one anywhere except from Larry peters studios and products.

Great!

May I ask if there are templates available to do collages like this, and where I can get them from?
