I agree with Tiff. Maybe if you had her rest her chin on that hand?

If you clone in an Oscar, I think it would be a brilliant shot.

Find a cute senior and give her some extra prints for her time. Ask her if you can try some things. start playing with your light and start chimping. Move it close so its too hot. move it back so its not enough. Learn how the feather it and how to control your shutter speed and manipulate the affect with your ISO and you can figure it out. You have to be in control of all three settings but you must know what the ambient is first.

If you dont have a light meter,, here is a little trick...use your camera. Put it in TV mode, set your shutter to 1/125 and take some test shots. The camera will tell you the correct aperature. From there, you have 2 settings you are playing with to get a look you like. Its a good staring point.

Im going out with a couple of beauty dishes, ND and circulars,,vagabond minis. its all is use outdoors any more. you would be surprised how simple it is and the results are awesome......love love love the grids and the socks that Buff provides with his beauty dish set ups. I leave my softboxes in the studio these days. Im triggering everything with pocket wizards flex and mini triggers ad if i use a speedlight , then its for shallow depth work and fill lighting only.

Thanks for all the tips! I went to your website as well. Really great photos on your portfolio.

...And that is why we need to use additional light sources, because available light does not always provide everything we need to sculpt an image. :-)

Hey, I'm trying ok? It's hard out here for AvailableLight! ;)

Really? I assumed you used a flash with a 1cm snoot to shoot light only in the whites of the eyes like a laser beam. Silly me.

(Love your work Tiff. If you really did do this, Id be building a 1cm snoot tomorrow.)

Wouldn't she need 2 flashes to make sure both eyes are equally over exposed =P

Usually just one. Especially if it's one of those tornado vortex flushers like they have at the mall!

Hey guys, I need some input on this shot. I like it, but I don't like it. I'm not really sure.

ok so lighting is subjective. I am like you- there's something I like and something I don't like about this photo. I thought (other than the hand) it was the lighting on her face specifically her eyes or something- clearly she is broad lit. After doing an quick edit to change this to short light I'm not sure I like the short light any better than the broad light LOL - fact is (in the words of Tiff) She's skinny- she can take it. Either way I'll post my editing just for the heck of it.

Hand it is, haha!

Jennifer- I'm not sure if I'll quite ever put my finger on whatever is bothering me in this shot. It very well could be the lighting. It was just the ambient light in my local Smulekoffs showroom. I knew I wasn't going to like the color, so I decided on black and white. I didn't feel it was bad enough to scrap, but it's certainly not my favorite shot.

Thanks for showing me your edit. I did dodge/burn a bit for contouring her face slightly, but she is incredibly thin as it is. Whole family is built super slim.

This isn't quite SOOC, but it's before I took it into photoshop to alter it more. This has bumped exposure, some fill light and a touch of contrast.

I did like this shot in particular, also done in the showroom, but in their window display.

With the laser beam you can probably use a prism to split the beam into two, therefor only needing one light source :D

Tiff, I was going back through the thread for some idea stealing and I have to say, this shot remains one of my all time favorites. Not only am I a sucker for pale skin and a red lip but Im also a sucker for an awesome composition and a patch of color. Good on you! :D
