ok, my question would be what should I attack with first ...

Setting ... back yard and inside the house.

I was thinking for the back yard while they play and run around i would use the 18-55 for the zoom to help get a tad closer on the shots.

Inside I was thinking 50mm for the 'portrait' shots and close ups ...

would this be a good starting attack? I am sure I will use both for each situation but just for the first round of pictures to judge and see how they come out ...

the idea sounds just fine to me but you're not really getting much more reach with the 18-55mm, I would use it more for the wide shots maybe in tight areas inside the house, the 50mm is a great lens for portraits and everything else, inside and outside the house both.....

If you have the cash, get a 430exII for inside (and even outside) and learn how to bounce it (not hard to do). That will improve the quality of your pics, especially inside and even when you're using the 50mm f/1.8.
