530 Super as Slave

I recently purchased a Sigma 530 Super. I'm currently trying to use the flash as an optical slave, and I'm having some trouble and I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong.

I have it set in slave mode "C0", 1:1 Power, F5, and tried zoom values from 17- 105mm. I'm placing it within a few feet of my subject matter and I'm simply deflecting my on camera flash with my hand, and reflecting it toward the Sigma. The Sigma flash goes off, however, my photos don't reflect that. I've tried shutter speeds between 1/60-1/200, but its as if the flash doesn't exist.

What else could I try? On the camera, this flash is extremely bright, and I believe the settings I'm using (other than further increasing the F value, are fairly strong and should be blatently obvious, if not over exposing the shot in my current setup.

Ideas?

Oh, I also have the iso value set to 100 on the flash, I'm actually shooting the camera in 400 just so I'm sure the camera is picking up the flash, I've also place the slave next to, and pointed up a wall. You can not see any flash in the photos. (I tried that in case the zoom was affecting the flash beam and it was falling outside the phto. I've also tried the on camera flash set to function at both the 1st and 2nd curtain, I've taken photos of the flash from across the room with the flash only a foot from the subject, and my exposure compensation turned down on the camera, its not picking it up...

lower the power on slave. It's not reloading fast enough for the e-ttl preflash.

When you are using the canon camera flash to fire the sigma, the sigma will also fire twice (if it has enough power) - 1 for the ttl evaluation, 1 for the actual photo.
At first ttl flash from camera the sigma will output full in your case (1:1) so it doesn't have enough time to reload for the second flash.

Simple optical slave fires the flash when it sees any bright flash. This won't work with the built-in flash on most Canon DSLR's because they always fire an ETTL preflash that will cause the Sigma to fire too soon. Some cameras have a manual option for their built-in flash and this allows you to use the simple optical slave.

Looking at your previous posts, it loks like you have a Canon 60D. You can set your bult-in flash to manual mode and it will solve your problem.

On your Sigma, C0 is simple optical flash. Try C1 or C1 for ETTL wireless flash triggered by your 60D.
