I've shot action and sports for 4 years with the non IS and have been completely pleased. I can't imagine what the new version would be like! I do know that my 2x extender does reduce image quality. From what I have seen the new combo is stellar! But for the $3,000 it would take for the new lens and extender combo I will have to wait a long time!
