Manual with Auto ISO........Does anyone use this ? I know most cameras don't have this option but the 7D does. I took a few pictures at a concert the other night and found it to work out perfect for the varying lighting conditions. I set for my max aperture.. f4, set the slowest shutter that I thought I needed to freeze movement 1/200 +/-, partial metering, and the Auto ISO took over from there. I ended up with great exposures on everything with ISO's ranging from 500-3200. My only complaint is that you cant use any EC, at least I haven't figured out how to do that yet ?

I rarely hear anyone talk about using Mv mode but it's a great option to have.

I do that. Though it has more to do with my 7D constantly picking a shutter speed 1-2 notches below what is handholdable for the lens I'm using in anything but bright light.

Yes, it is a usable option. Like you, though, I wish there was a way to EC (in camera) without having to do it in post. It also works well with video in manual mode when you want a specific aperture and shutter speed in varying light and still retain some auto exposure.

When you're setting Shutter Speed and Aperture, EC is moot. EC is used to adjust the other setting in either Av or Tv, adjust it from proper exposure (as determined by the meter anyways)... by using manual you can simply change the other setting (which in your situation would have been shutter speed).

Not when using Auto ISO. We'd like a way to shift the ISO up or down to provide EC while leaving aperture and shutter speed static.

No you can't, because the Auto ISO will adjust to counter a change in aperture or shutter speed. EC could be applied by adjusting ISO +/- depending on the desired exposure.

Unlike Nikon, Canon has never provided EC in manual mode before, so they lack any means of inputting that, without violating the current ergonomic principle. In manual mode, the same dial as otherwise is used for exposure compensation is instead used for aperture adjustment. Canon cameras don't have any +/- button (well, the 1D series do, but not the 7D) you could press to switch between shutter speed/aperture vs. exposure compensation.

Does the * button work to lock auto ISO in manual mode? I haven't tried. Normally it's of no use in manual mode, since the exposure is locked already.

Nope. The ISO still changes as the camera is panned.

I posted this same thing a few months ago on the same very subject. If we had a way to use EC while doing this method, it would be amazing and my "go-to" selection for everyday shooting.
