What do you mean by snaps closed?

It doesn't lock onto the subject, it clamps with the 5d3.

It is that quick...

Its the best way I can describe it.

It is like it just snaps into place.

Obviously some of the outer points are a little slower, but use the main ones and this lens on the 5d3 focuses like lightning.

Just had this lens delivered from Amazon.

Haven’t had much time with it yet, but one quick observation, and a question:

I noticed AF sort of “jumps” while trying to focus on a subject. Is that normal? Is that AF doing that, or the OS?

Thank you all in advance.

Will post some pics when I have a chance to play around with it.

The OS on this lens does seem a little strange. It seems to turn off instantly when you remove pressure from the shutter button. I've only had mine a few days and the jury is still out as to wether I will keep it or return it. I'll know after this weekend.

Thank you, Bob.

I am going to exchange this with another copy from Amazon. Mine may have been just a bad sample. In all the reviews I read before making the purchase, never did I read anyone mentioning this issue, with OS being “jumpy” when you first focus on a subject.

Nope. Mine doesn't "jump". Of course if you are used to slower AF, then it may seem like it jumps. :-)
As for the person with the OS issue, the OS shuts off at about 3 seconds from the time you let off the shutter release. This is the same with the Canon. If it is doing something different then you are the first person I've seen with the problem but you may want to exchange it.

Took it out this weekend to see what I can get out of it. I'm not going to say I'm impressed but the lens did OK. I think the sharpness at f/2.8 is acceptable for most prints but it is uninspiring to view on the monitor. As everyone has said, it gets quite a bit better stopped down 1/2 stop. I was on the fence as to wether I would send this back or not. Overall it will do for now but certainly when funds are available, I will get the Canon 70-200 f/2.8 IS II. Here's a couple fully processed at f/3.5 and f/4 respectively. Taken with the 50D on a monopod.
