Ok well first...

Hello, My name is Jeff, i have been a member for 24 minutes now.
Previously I have peruzed the search feature heavily... to come to a few points that i would like to state first so we all are clear that I did learn something from the search feature

1. user not camera gets good pics
2. buy the book and learn
3. lense is where it is but body is needed

so with those few and i know i remember a few others....

We use a point and shoot thin fit in the pocket 10mp camera... while it works.. it is nice..
my neighbor has the canon t1i and my sis in law has the nikon d5000.
I was leaning towards a nikon d5000 but my neighbor convinced me in the tXi...

I am not going to look at purchasing again (unless a lense or two) so want something that will work good at the moment and good for the future..
my 10yr old is in soccer and our camera pics are what they are.. ok...
my 4yr old is now signed up for soccer this year and they both will be signed up for hockey.... cold and usually at night to which our 10mp camera really sucks...

so what i need to know is this... for joe schmoe new guy that will have to learn...

is the $600 canon t1i a better choice in saving $200 and loosing a few mp and video fps worth it over the canon t2i?
yes i will most likely use the camera for video as we have a cheap jvc dv camcorder....

i see i can get a t2i for $829 new with the el cheapo lense..... i cant really find just a body cheap enough to then buy a better lense to start out with a better kit off the bat....so figure get the cheap lense with kit...

my neighbor with the t1i has a few "Grey" lenses (i believe since he only paid about $400 for them) to which i can use to test and try out.... or if i buy one he doesnt have we can "Share"....

side note... my wife inherited a Canon F-1 camera from her grandfather whom passed. he has tons of stuff with a custom case...
small lense, 200mm lense, flash, hand held clicker on a long line to take the pic and other weird stuff for it.... now i know the lenses will not work on the t2i but i figure if i get a t2i.... and use it... and also get my wife to use the F-1.. not only will it make her happy with knowing it was her grandfathers... but it will also let her use a 35mm as she misses hers.. but her 35mm was a cheap in pocket model that i hated too....

so can you recommend the body only and a specific lense that will start me off great for an all around setup? just birthday parties, sports, general stuff???? or is the default lense good enough for that for now until i learn now to use the camera????

also some shots of the el cheapo... could only imagine how well pics would look with a dslr!!!!!!!!!!!!

All I can recommend to you is....

Any DSLR does magic for photos in general. I am just shooting with an XT right now, but every person Ive done pictures for has been more than pleased. For your situation, a crop body might be good since your it obviously seems like your gonna be needing that zoom.

Welcome man - I am looking at the T2i as well for video, but I need a FF badly... so we'll see what buckles first. The video of them is damn good and Im sure you'd get use out of that as well.

I would pick the newer T2i (550D) for the improved ISO performance and full 1080p HD video
