Hi Guys

Often when I download my CF card from my 20d it has 2 folders on it. My friends 350d does it as well - I think.

Can anyone tell me why this happens and is there a reason for it happening?

Incidentally - I have 2 of the 80x Lexar CF cards with the serial number that are supposed to be a problem - I have not found a problem - yet!

Regards

Your camera starts a new folder for every 100 files. So, if you shoot from image #50 to image #150, you will have about 50 files in the first folder and about 50 in the second one.

If you get Zoombroswer EX from the canon website it will download all the files in one go, regardless of how many folders. Its supposed to be the 'beginners' version of EOS Viewer utility and ships with compacts, but I find it can do a number of useful things (like ignoring folders) that make it more practical generally. It will also rename you files to something more meaningfull that IMG-XXXXX as well while downloading which is also handy.

I said the same thing to myself once I figured it out...... They don't mention it at all in the instruction booklet... Then again they dont mention alot of things in the instruction booklet....

Try page 61 of your manual. Menu | File Numbering Methods. There's a lot in there, if you look.

is there any way to diable the "create new folder" every 100 shots? I would rather create my own folders for whatever event i am shooting instead of creating folders that i will need to sort after download.

Nope. Except, IIRC the 1D and 1Ds allow you to name the folders and store up to 1000 photos per. But the DR, DRXT, 20D all have a hard-coded 100 files/folder limit.

I understand the 10000 limit per folder. However, unlink the previous posts, I don't necessarily want to name my own folder. However , I -DO- want to stop the camera from creating empty folders. For example, I'm now on my second ten-thousand, and each time I format a new card, it creates an empty folder for the first 10,000 and places current files in the second folder. I can see where it will get rediculous when you are shooting in the, say, 60,000's and the camera is creating 5 empty folders on each card.

Any way to turn it off?

It may not happen if you allow the camera to start numbering from 1 again every time you insert a new (or blank) card. It sounds like you have it set to continue from the last number. Its an option in the menus to select which happens. Of course you may want to keep numbering sequentially and not start again, in which case it will solve one problem and create another.

Appreciate your reply. I can see it's a choice between problem features. Unfortunately, the way I catalog pictures I have to leave the camera in sequential mode. Perhaps I'll email canon. I cannot understand the advantage of (theoretically) creating dozens of empty folders on a CF card and why they designed the camera that way. Perhaps it's a R&D oversight. Thanks /Dan
