My wife has a couple of female wasp spiders (Argiope bruennichi) in captivity and one of them has made an egg sac. It's an impressive-looking thing which seems to have been made from a combination of silk and chewed material. The other female ate her mate so may well be heading towards doing the same thing: I'll be keeping an eye on her in case I can get shots of the building process.

First shows the sac and the spider responsible.

Second a close-up of the sac itself.

That's pretty incredible. Creepy, but a cool shot.

Thanks! Here's a shot of a large female.

And here's one with a male. In this species the male is always much smaller than the female.

Cheers! Yes she is - she has a collection of about 30 tarantulas, originally as a way of combating her fear of spiders! This shot of "Myrtle", her Mexican Red-kneed Tarantula, was used this year by the British Tarantula Society for their 25th Anniversary T-shirt.

And here is Myrtle and me, with the T-shirt.
