15 here...got interested in photography less than a year ago, with a G11 (now broken)... I tend to take the most random things ever, though.

pricey :D Have fun :)

Sadly I can't buy any new lenses right now :( so I'm stuck with "only" a 5D MK II, 24-70 and 50 1.8 ... not that bad I guess ;)

Loving all the photos,
But I don't understand how people under 16 can justify and even afford spending £1000+ on cameras+equipment?!
I'm 14 myself and I could only just about afford a used 400D a couple of months ago

I think it really depends whether you have someone in the family who can pay for it.

And I think the word "justify" is really difficult here - there are things you can shoot with a 5D MK II but not a 400D -> nothing to justify there.

Yeah, I have people in my family who could pay for it, but they won't and I know they won't.

And yes obviously there are things you can do with a 5D that you can't with a 400D but that's exactly why there's a difference in price.

What I'm asking is, how can a 14 year old justify spending £1000+ on equipment when he/she isn't even old enough to be a professional and almost certainly won't have the means of making the money back?

-> there is more to it than just the "means of making the money back"

Think about the enjoyment of photography. I don't make any money from it either, it's just a hobby.
But think how much money adolescents pour down the drain in the form of consumption of alcoholic liquids?

I don't drink alcohol... do not go to parties (hate the things)... -> I write with a Montblanc, shoot with a 5D MK II :)
I also do not game - my laptop is now 2,5 years old - and still works brilliantly :)
(21 right now, studying mathematics)

Different people enjoy different things - and if you develop an interest in photography at 14 - why not support it, especially if you do better than snapshots.
If you can, start young.

Start young for sure. I party and drink when I can but I don't let it lead my life or suck my bank account dry haha.

Yes I know there is more to it, but you can enjoy it almost all the same without spending £1000+.

The money they pour down the drain on alcohol is something I'm also against, it's the same with cigarettes.

Take the Montblanc for example, without it, would you be incapable of writing? No you wouldn't, a pen is a pen, you have it because you wanted it, not because you need it.
In the same way that these teenagers just want the ridiculously expensive photography equipment, they do not need it.
