I'm 14 myself and I could only just about afford a used 400D a couple of months ago I think it really depends whether you have someone in the family who can pay for it. 5D MK II AF Satisfaction Poll | Reduced Kit List

And I think the word "justify" is really difficult here - there are things you can shoot with a 5D MK II but not a 400D -> nothing to justify there. Yeah, I have people in my family who could pay for it, but they won't and I know they won't.

And yes obviously there are things you can do with a 5D that you can't with a 400D but that's exactly why there's a difference in price. What I'm asking is, how can a 14 year old justify spending £1000+ on equipment when he/she isn't even old enough to be a professional and almost certainly won't have the means of making the money back? -> there is more to it than just the "means of making the money back" 5D MK II AF Satisfaction Poll | Reduced Kit List

I don't make any money from it either, it's just a hobby. But think how much money adolescents pour down the drain in the form of consumption of alcoholic liquids? I don't drink alcohol... do not go to parties (hate the things)... -> I write with a Montblanc, shoot with a 5D MK II ![]() I also do not game - my laptop is now 2,5 years old - and still works brilliantly ![]() (21 right now, studying mathematics) Different people enjoy different things - and if you develop an interest in photography at 14 - why not support it, especially if you do better than snapshots. If you can, start young. Yes I know there is more to it, but you can enjoy it almost all the same without spending £1000+.
