I'm doing my first newborn shoot tomorrow morning and need some lens and camera setting advice. I'm planning to shoot most of the pictures in front of a large window with natural light coming in. Would you recommend me starting out with my 17-55 or my 50 1.8?

The baby is 5 days old. Assuming he is sleeping, I should be able to use my 17-55 and, with the IS advantage, bump the shutter speed down to around 1/30 so that I don't have to use too high of an ISO. Would this be a good assumption?

What aperture setting is best for close-up newborn shots in this type of setting? If using the 50mm, I may not even want to go wide open to 1.8 as the DOF would be too shallow.

I'd go for the 50mm wide open! Shot my little cousin with tge 1.4 and loved the results!
Thing is, babies are cute and soft so you dont want the photo tp be like razor sharp. The DoF will make the skin and hair soft while keeping the eyes sharp. I think you'll like the results. I know I did ;)

+1 on the 50mm. I did some baby photos for some friends using it and I was very happy with it.

5 days old should be sleeping most of the time. the good thing about new borns is you have plenty of time to try different things. Start off with the 50 and do some with the 17-55. Bring a flash too. When they're that young, the flash doesn't seem to bother them. All of this speaking as a dad, not a photographer.

NEVER use a low shutter speed to save on ISO noise, you will regret it later. Keep it at 1/100 if you can for people shots- even on a newborn. Motion blur always ruins a photo, while ISO noise rarely does unless you are a pixel peeper. If you are shooting during the day in front of a window, ISO 400 or 800 should be plenty at f2.8-4. Personally, I think the zoom will be more useful unless you have shots that specifically require f1.8 DOF (which you probably won't).

I ended up going with the 17-55 exclusively. I think they came out relatively well for my first newborn shoot.

Had some trouble with resizing them, as it distorted the results. So these are the full resolution JPG's for a few of them.

There we go, resized them a little bit. And thanks Alex, but he's actually a good friend's baby and not ours, though we're expecting a little boy in December :)
